In recent years, social media has played a huge role in reshaping the way people are consuming music. This has helped in reviving the interest in physical copies of albums. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram have made vinyl records and CDs more desirable and sought out for. There are many influencers who like to show off their collections by ranking their albums or unboxing their vinyls. Over time, the amount of people who buy physical media as opposed to just streaming has increased, and this increase isn’t going to stop anytime soon.
Many artists tend to collaborate with major retail stores to try and release “exclusive” versions/variants of their albums, which has only evolved this trend more. For example, when an artist collaborates with Target, the vinyl often includes an alternative album cover, different disc variants, exclusive posters, or even bonus tracks.
These “exclusive” experiences create a sense of urgency, encouraging fans to purchase the vinyl records before they sell out.
Now, it’s not just about listening to the music, but about owning a special piece of it.
Selling physical copies also benefits artists in important ways. Not only do they receive revenue from the sales of the physical media, but the purchases also count toward album chart numbers. This can help albums rank higher on the charts, gaining more recognition and visibility for their hard effort. For the dedicated fans, buying a vinyl or CD becomes a way to support their favorite artists beyond just streaming.
Many people collect vinyl and CDs as a hobby, while others do it because they are passionate fans who want a more immersive listening experience. Holding the actual album and being able to spin the vinyl on a record player gives people a special feeling making them feel closer to the music. Personally, I have been collecting vinyl records and CDs for more than three years and I feel more connected to music because of it. There is something special about picking up my vinyl records and placing them on the turntable.
As more people rediscover the value of physical music, it’s clear that vinyl and CDs are not just the current trend, but they are becoming an important part of how fans are experiencing music.
