Our Anaheim High School Journalism class had the amazing opportunity to visit the Chinese American Museum and Little Tokyo in downtown Los Angeles on April 22nd. Thanks to our amazing event coordinators, Jonathon Negrete and Javier Uribe, and Journalism teacher, Mrs. Rodriguez. The trip started off with the class meeting at the Fullerton train station and taking the train straight to LA Union Station. For some, this was the first time taking the train and/or also being in Los Angeles.
The class was able to take a quick look around La Plaza at Olvera Street before the tour of the Museum. The tour of the Chinese American Museum was led by an amazing worker named Roger, who guided them through a timeline of events of Chinese American history. The timeline ran from the early 1800’s through the early 2000’s. They were then guided through the last standing building of the original Chinatown, and then more exhibits that explored deeper into some historical events, historical figures, and big impacts in Chinese American history.
After the tour of the museum, the class walked down the street to Little Tokyo, where they were allowed to walk around and explore Japanese culture. There were many things to do, like shop at Japanese specialty shops and restaurants, explore a Japan-inspired area, and learn about Japan’s history.
After their time in Little Tokyo, they headed back to La Plaza at Olvera Street and explored that area for a little while before taking the train back from Union Station to Fullerton. That was the perfect ending to a field trip that has been described as “The funnest field trip I’ve ever been on” and “A field trip that didn’t feel like one.”
Nuestra clase de Periodismo de Anaheim High School tuvo la increíble oportunidad de visitar el Museo Chino Americano y Little Tokyo en el centro de Los Ángeles el 22 de abril. Gracias a nuestros increíbles coordinadores del evento, Jonathon Negrete y Javier Uribe, y a nuestra maestra de Periodismo, la Sra. Rodríguez.
El viaje comenzó con la clase reuniéndose en la estación de tren de Fullerton y tomando el tren directo a la estación Union en Los Ángeles. Para algunos, esta fue la primera vez tomando el tren y/o estando en la ciudad de Los Ángeles.La clase pudo dar un vistazo rápido a La Plaza en la calle Olvera antes del recorrido por el museo.
El tour del Museo Chino Americano fue dirigido por un increíble trabajador llamado Roger, quien los guió a través de una línea del tiempo de eventos de la historia chinoamericana. La línea del tiempo abarcaba desde principios de los años 1800 hasta principios de los 2000. Después, fueron guiados por el último edificio que queda del Chinatown original, y luego por más exhibiciones que profundizaban en eventos históricos, figuras importantes y grandes impactos en la historia chinoamericana.
Después del recorrido del museo, la clase caminó hacia Little Tokyo, donde pudo caminar y explorar la cultura japonesa. Había muchas cosas que hacer, como comprar en tiendas y restaurantes japoneses, explorar un área inspirada por Japón y aprender sobre la historia de Japón.
Después de su tiempo en Little Tokyo, regresaron a La Plaza en la calle Olvera y exploraron esa área por un rato antes de tomar el tren de regreso desde la estación Union a Fullerton. Ese fue el final perfecto para una excursión que ha sido detallada como “La excursión más divertida en la que he estado” y “Una excursión que no se sintió como una.”
