In continuation of the teacher spotlight series, today Mr. Long will be featured. In this edition we will be able to learn a little more of his background, educational journey, and why he decided to become a teacher. Mr. Long’s journey begins at Brea Olinda High School where he graduated in 1999 with an overall GPA of 3.8. With his impressive GPA he got accepted into “different colleges like San Diego and Santa Barbara” and while he had gotten accepted to these great schools he didn’t know what he wanted to do with neither of his parents having a previous college education. Along with his parents unfortunately not being able to afford him attending schools like those with them both working two jobs and still living paycheck to paycheck. Therefore he decided to attend Fullerton college in hopes of receiving his AA and then transferring to a university. At 20 years old, Mr. Long was able to get a job with his father at Sycamore Junior High as campus security with his father having been the head custodian for 40 years.
From this experience he was able to learn that he enjoyed interacting with the students and teachers he worked with and while having those connections he realized that he shared many things in common with other teachers. During that time he transferred from Fullerton College to Cal State Fullerton where he was able to get his undergrad in history despite him never really enjoying school or much of his classes except for history. That is when he decided that he wanted to become a History teacher. He began his teaching career by being a substitute at Sycamore for computer classes and special education classes which allowed him to truly fall in love with teaching. He was then hired at Orangeview Junior High as a History teacher. During that time he was also going to school full time at Azusa Pacific where he was able to earn his teaching credential and masters degree. After his first year at Orangeview he was unfortunately surplused out of the district but was then able to get a job at Holy Family Cathedral for one year where he taught 4 different classes with a large pay cut. He was then fortunate to be asked back to the AUHSD where he taught history at Brookhurst Junior High School but was yet again surplused to a different school.
Finally, Mr. Long was able to get a break when he found his home at Anaheim High School where he has worked for 18 years. He loves teaching because of the impact that he is able to leave on people, especially when students that he taught years prior come to visit him and tell him their stories of how they became successful. He enjoys knowing that he played a part in helping them become successful. Another reason why he loves teaching is because no day is boring, there is always something new to learn to become better. If Mr. Long were to not be a teacher he would most likely be in the business world with either his own business or working for one of his friends that has a business. Outside of teaching he enjoys being outside whether it be hiking or or visiting the beach along with that he enjoys playing baseball or soccer with his kids. Mr. Long in general lives a healthy lifestyle. Therefore he loves partaking in fitness activities while taking care of himself and raising his children to make healthy lifestyle choices. Teaching in turn has helped Mr. Long in many ways whether that be allowing him to have more patience than he ever could have had or helping him learn and become a better father. While also becoming a better teacher after becoming a father, he has been able to become more understanding, empathetic, and caring. His dad’s side tends to come out a lot in classrooms and he hopes his students are able to see that. Some advice Mr. Long would give to his younger self is to do what makes him happiest in life, to not care what others think of him because those who truly care and love him will be happy with who he is, lastly not taking things for granted and realizing that choices that are made now will impact his future. But he says “that does not mean we won’t make mistakes along the way because we will.” It’s only important that one learns from them and grows as an individual.

En esta edición podremos aprender un poco más sobre su pasado, su trayectoria educativa y por qué decidió convertirse en maestro. La historia del Sr. Long comienza en la escuela secundaria Brea Olinda High School, donde se graduó en 1999 con un promedio general de 3.8. Gracias a su impresionante promedio, fue aceptado en “diferentes universidades como San Diego y Santa Bárbara”. Aunque había sido aceptado en estas excelentes escuelas, no sabía qué quería estudiar porque ninguno de sus padres había tenido una educación universitaria. Además, sus padres desafortunadamente no podían pagar universidades como esas, ya que ambos trabajaban en dos empleos y aun así vivían de cheque en cheque. Por eso decidió asistir a Fullerton College con la esperanza de obtener su título AA y después transferirse a una universidad. A los 20 años, el Sr. Long pudo conseguir un trabajo con su padre en Sycamore Junior High como guardia de seguridad del campus, ya que su padre había sido el jefe de mantenimiento por 40 años.
Gracias a esta experiencia, aprendió que disfrutaba interactuar con los estudiantes y maestros con quienes trabajaba. Al crear esas conexiones, se dio cuenta de que tenía muchas cosas en común con otros maestros. Durante ese tiempo, se transfirió de Fullerton College a Cal State Fullerton, donde obtuvo su licenciatura en historia, ya que nunca le gustó mucho la escuela ni la mayoría de sus clases, excepto historia. Fue entonces cuando decidió que quería convertirse en maestro de historia. Comenzó su carrera docente siendo sustituto en Sycamore Junior High para clases de computación y educación especial, lo que le permitió enamorarse verdaderamente de la enseñanza. Él ama enseñar por el impacto que puede dejar en las personas, especialmente cuando estudiantes que enseñó años atrás regresan a visitarlo y le cuentan historias sobre cómo lograron el éxito. Él disfruta saber que tuvo un papel en ayudarlos a ser exitosos. Otra razón por la que ama enseñar es porque ningún día es aburrido; siempre hay algo nuevo que aprender para mejorar. Si el Sr. Long no fuera maestro, probablemente estaría en el mundo de los negocios, ya sea con su propio negocio o trabajando para uno de sus amigos que tiene una empresa. Fuera de la enseñanza, disfruta estar al aire libre, ya sea haciendo senderismo o visitando la playa. También le gusta jugar béisbol o fútbol con sus hijos. En general, el Sr. Long vive un estilo de vida saludable, por lo que disfruta participar en actividades físicas mientras se cuida a sí mismo y enseña a sus hijos a tomar decisiones saludables. La enseñanza también ha ayudado al Sr. Long de muchas maneras, ya sea permitiéndole tener más paciencia de la que alguna vez pensó tener o ayudándolo a aprender y convertirse en un mejor padre. Además, después de convertirse en padre, pudo ser más comprensivo, empático y atento, cualidades que también lo ayudaron a convertirse en un mejor maestro. Su lado de su papá suele salir mucho en el salón de clases y espera que sus estudiantes puedan notarlo. Un consejo que el Sr. Long le daría a su yo más joven sería hacer lo que más lo haga feliz en la vida, no preocuparse por lo que los demás piensen de él porque quienes realmente lo quieren y se preocupan por él estarán felices con quien es. También aconseja no dar las cosas por sentado y darse cuenta de que las decisiones que se toman ahora afectarán el futuro. Pero él dice que “eso no significa que no cometeremos errores en el camino, porque sí los cometeremos.” Lo importante es aprender de ellos y crecer como persona.
