His show came at a time when immigrants are being targeted by the US government and facing horrific deportations. Immigrants are currently being targeted in attacks from ICE agents and are being sent to detention camps where they are subjected to inhumane and horrid conditions. It is not just immigrants who are being targeted right now. Nine US citizens and counting were killed by ICE this month. This halftime show was more than just music or a performance; it was a way to protest and show resistance to a corrupt government fueled by hate. This has been a hard time, especially for Latinx people, as they are being targeted most by these mass deportations.

Bad Bunny’s halftime show was packed with symbolism. One of the clear messages was the use of sugar cane. For historical context, sugar cane was the primary cash crop of the Caribbean. Enslaved Africans were forced to work in brutal conditions in the sugar plantations until the late 1800s, when the US took over colonial rule in Puerto Rico after the Spanish-American War. US companies profited from the lands of Puerto Rico and made enormous profits from Puerto Rican land. The sugar cane in the halftime show is a nod to the lasting impact of enslaved labor and colonialism in Puerto Rico. 

The biggest message of Bad Bunny’s halftime show was that love will always defeat hate. Bad Bunny’s show featured many celebrities such as Karol G, Young Miko, Pedro Pascal, Jessica Alba, Cardi B, and included performances from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin. The set in which Bad Bunny performed highlighted Puerto Rican culture and showed the beauty of Latin America. 

We interviewed Mrs. Gamboa, a history teacher here at Anaheim and asked her about her opinion on the halftime show.

We asked, How did you feel watching the Bad Bunny halftime show and what did you think about the overall message and symbolism?

She replied: “I loved the show, not necessarily a Bad Bunny fan, but I loved the show and I was able to pick up on some of the hidden messages. Some I didn’t know until after, but I love the message and I, I feel that that was the time, the halftime show that we needed at this present time. 
Right? Because it brought awareness of just everything he did, the number he wore, just everything that he did was given that message that not everyone across our country, unfortunately, are paying attention to or listening to. And it was a nice subtle way of doing it.”

Bad Bunny’s halftime show brought hope in a time of darkness. As many people deal with the horrifying effects of mass deportation, the show allowed so many to celebrate Latin American culture and people. It also reinforced the idea that in tough times, the only thing stronger than hate is love.

El espectáculo de medio tiempo de Bad Bunny fue un momento monumental e innovador en la cultura pop y la política. El enriquecedor espectáculo de medio tiempo de Bad Bunny dejó atónitos a los espectadores. Su espectáculo llegó en un momento en que los inmigrantes están en la mira del gobierno estadounidense y enfrentan deportaciones terribles. Actualmente, los inmigrantes son blanco de ataques de agentes de ICE y son enviados a campos de detención donde son sometidos a condiciones inhumanas y horribles. No son solo los inmigrantes los que están en la mira en este momento. Nueve ciudadanos estadounidenses, y contando, fueron asesinados por ICE este mes. Los africanos esclavizados fueron obligados a trabajar en condiciones brutales en las plantaciones azucareras hasta finales del siglo XIX, cuando Estados Unidos asumió el dominio colonial en Puerto Rico tras la Guerra Hispano-Estadounidense. Empresas estadounidenses se lucraron con las tierras puertorriqueñas y obtuvieron enormes ganancias. La caña de azúcar en el espectáculo de medio tiempo fue un guiño al impacto duradero del trabajo esclavizado y el colonialismo en Puerto Rico.

Le preguntamos: ¿Cómo se sintió al ver el espectáculo de medio tiempo de Bad Bunny y qué le pareció el mensaje y el simbolismo en general?

Ella respondió: “Me encantó el espectáculo, no soy necesariamente fan de Bad Bunny, pero me encantó y pude captar algunos mensajes ocultos. Algunos no los supe hasta después, pero me encanta el mensaje y siento que ese era el momento, el espectáculo de medio tiempo que necesitábamos en este momento. ¿Verdad? Porque creó conciencia de que todo lo que hizo, la ropa que usó, todo lo que hizo transmitió ese mensaje al que, lamentablemente, no todos en nuestro país prestan atención o escuchan. Y fue una forma sutil y agradable de hacerlo.”
