After months of anticipation, our very own Chamber Singers finally embarked on their long awaited trip to New York City. This unforgettable experience gave students the opportunity to explore iconic landmarks and perform on one of the most prestigious stages in the world. Over the course of five days, the group created lasting memories that will stay with them for years to come. 

Through this article, I will be going day by day to see how the program spent their days in New York and showcasing interviews from different choir students. 

Day 1: 

The trip kicked off with a visit to Times Square, where students took in the bright lights and energetic atmosphere of the city. For many, it was their first time experiencing a city so large and alive. Four year choir student Valery Flores shared that stepping into New York felt completely different compared to Anaheim, noting that the liveliness of the city took her by surprise. That evening, the group had dinner at Ellen’s Stardust Diner where the waitstaff performed musical theater songs while serving the food. As someone involved in musical theater, Valery especially enjoyed the experience, explaining that it felt like watching a live performance while eating. She appreciated seeing the waiters and waitresses showcase their talent right in front of the audience. Although the first day was full of excitement, Valery mentioned that one of her favorite parts of the trip overall was visiting Central Park because of how peaceful and relaxing it felt compared to the busy city. 

Day 2: 

On the second day, students toured NBC Studios and explored Rockefeller Center, getting a behind the scenes look at how major television shows are produced. Choir president Fatima Gonzalez described the experience as “really really cool,” especially seeing the actual stages where famous artists have performed. She was amazed by how much goes on behind the scenes and how surreal it felt to stand in those spaces in real life. 

Later, the group visited Top of the Rock, taking in the amazing views of the New York skyline. The day ended with a classic New York pizza dinner at John’s Pizzeria. Fatima said the pizza definitely lives up to the hype, especially considering the price for such a large slice. Despite all the activities that day, she shared that her favorite part of the entire trip was seeing Carnegie Hall, calling it an unforgettable moment to stand in such a legendary venue where artists like The Beatles once performed. 

Day 3:

Day three was one of the most exciting moments of the trip. The Chamber Singers had the opportunity to rehearse at the world renowned Carnegie Hall, an honor that many musicians only dream of. Andrea Nario described stepping into the hall for the first time as surreal, emphasizing how meaningful it felt to perform on the same stage as so many famous artists. She shared that after all the rehearsals, finally performing with a large choir and hearing everything come together made the experience very rewarding. The performance ended with a standing ovation, a moment that Andrea said brought her to tears.

Later that evening, students enjoyed a family style dinner at Carmine’s before attending a performance of The Great Gatsby. Andrea described her first Broadway show as absolutely spectacular. As a longtime fan of the musical, she said seeing it come to life with actors, dancing, singing, and a full orchestra was something she couldn’t fully put in words, “you had to be in the room where it happened” she mentioned, but no pun intended. Despite all the highlights of this day, Andrea shared that one of her favorite moments of the trip overall was actually the first night at Ellen’s Stardust Diner because of the interactive performances and lively atmosphere. 

Day 4:

Students spent part of the day walking through Central Park, experiencing a calmer and more scenic side of New York City. Michelle Lopez described the park as both beautiful and overwhelming in the best way, pointing out how many different things were happening at once, from vendors to street activity. She said it felt very different from home because New York is constantly moving, which made the experience even more memorable. 

That evening marked the biggest highlight of the trip, performing at Carnegie Hall. Singing in front of a full audience was an unforgettable experience for many students. Michelle also shared that performing alongside other talented choirs from around the nation was inspiring and made the experience even more special. She also mentioned how powerful it felt to sing in such a large group compared to the smaller chamber ensemble back home in Anaheim. 

Michelle added that beyond the performances, her favorite part of the trip was building stronger connections with her fellow choir members. She explained that spending so much time together allowed everyone to grow closer and create meaningful memories that lasted beyond the trip itself. 

Day 5:

On their final day, the group visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, reflecting on the cultural and historical significance of these landmarks. Wearing matching “I heart NY” shirts, the Chamber Singers embraced the moment by singing the National Anthem in front of the Statue of Liberty. Chamber member Shilah Escobosa admitted that it felt a little embarrassing at first, but ultimately it became cool and a memorable experience, especially when people in the crowd started to applaud them. 

She also shared that riding the New York subway was surprisingly fun. Although she prefers the OC bus, she enjoyed the experience of traveling like a true New Yorker. When asked about her favorite part of the trip, Shilah said Central Park stood out the most because of how beautiful and enjoyable it was to explore. 

Conclusion:

Overall, the New York trip was an incredible experience for the Chamber Singers. From exploring the city to performing at Carnegie Hall, students not only grew as musicians, but also created meaningful memories with their peers. This trip will undoubtedly remain one of the highlights of their high school journey. It has made an impression on the history of our very own high school, marking the first group of students from Anaheim to perform at Carnegie Hall.

Esta experiencia inolvidable les dio a los estudiantes la oportunidad de explorar lugares icónicos y presentarse en uno de los escenarios más prestigiosos del mundo. A lo largo de cinco días, el grupo creó recuerdos inolvidables que permanecerán con ellos durante muchos años.

Día 1:
El viaje comenzó con una visita a Times Square, donde los estudiantes disfrutaron de las luces brillantes y la energía de la ciudad. Para muchos, era la primera vez que experimentaban una ciudad tan grande y llena de vida. La estudiante de cuarto año de coro, Valery Flores, compartió que llegar a Nueva York se sintió completamente diferente en comparación con Anaheim, señalando que la animación de la ciudad la tomó por sorpresa.

Esa noche, el grupo cenó en Ellen’s Stardust Diner, donde los meseros cantan canciones de teatro musical mientras sirven la comida. Como alguien involucrada en el teatro musical, Valery disfrutó especialmente la experiencia, explicando que se sentía como ver un espectáculo en vivo mientras comían. Le gustó ver a los meseros mostrar su talento justo frente al público. Aunque el primer día estuvo lleno de emoción, Valery mencionó que una de sus partes favoritas de todo el viaje fue visitar Central Park, ya que le pareció un lugar tranquilo y relajante en comparación con la ciudad tan rápida.

Día 2:
En el segundo día, los estudiantes visitaron y exploraron los estudios de NBC y exploraron Rockefeller Center, obteniendo una mirada detrás de cámaras de cómo se producen los programas de televisión más importantes. La presidenta del coro, Fatima Gonzalez, describió la experiencia como “muy, muy genial,” especialmente al ver los escenarios reales donde artistas famosos se han presentado. Le sorprendió todo lo que ocurre detrás de cámaras y lo surrealista que fue estar en esos lugares en la vida real.

Más tarde, el grupo visitó Top of the Rock, disfrutando de las increíbles vistas de Nueva York. El día terminó con una cena clásica de “New York pizza” en John’s Pizzeria. Fatima dijo que la pizza supera las expectativas, especialmente considerando el precio por una pizza tan grande. Día 3:

Los Chamber Singers tuvieron la oportunidad de practicar en el bien reconocido Carnegie Hall, un honor con el que muchos músicos solo pueden soñar. Andrea Nario describió entrar al lugar por primera vez como algo surrealista, explicando lo significativo que fue presentarse en el mismo escenario donde tantos artistas famosos se han presentado. Compartió que, después de todas las prácticas, finalmente presentarse con un coro grande y escuchar cómo todo se unía hizo que la experiencia fuera muy gratificante. La presentación terminó con una ovación de pie, un momento que, según Andrea, la hizo llorar.

Más tarde esa noche, los estudiantes disfrutaron de una cena estilo familiar en Carmine’s antes de asistir a una actuación de The Great Gatsby. Andrea describió su primera obra de Broadway como absolutamente espectacular. Como fan de la obra desde hace tiempo, dijo que verla presentada en vivo con los actores, baile, canto y una orquesta en vivo, fue algo que no pudo describir completamente con palabras; “tenías que estar en el lugar para entenderlo,” mencionó, sin intención de hacer un juego de palabras. A pesar de todos los momentos ocurriendo en el día, Andrea compartió que uno de sus momentos favoritos de todo el viaje fue en realidad la primera noche en Ellen’s Stardust Diner, debido a las presentaciones interactivas y el ambiente tan animado.

Día 4:
Los estudiantes pasaron parte del día caminando por Central Park, experimentando un lado más tranquilo de la ciudad de Nueva York. Michelle Lopez describió el parque como hermoso e incontenible en el mejor sentido, señalando que había muchas cosas ocurriendo al mismo tiempo, desde vendedores hasta actividades en las calles. Dijo que se sentía muy diferente en comparación a casa porque Nueva York nunca se para, lo que hizo la experiencia aún más memorable.

Esa noche marcó el momento más importante del viaje, presentarse en Carnegie Hall. Cantar frente a una audiencia llena fue una experiencia inolvidable para muchos estudiantes. Michelle también compartió que presentarse junto a otros coros talentosos de todo el país fue inspirador e hizo que la experiencia fuera aún más especial. También mencionó lo poderoso que se sintió cantar en un grupo tan grande en comparación con el pequeño conjunto de coro en Anaheim.

Michelle agregó que sobre las presentaciones, su parte favorita del viaje fue construir conexiones más fuertes con sus compañeros del coro. Explicó que pasar tanto tiempo juntos permitió que todos se acercaran más y crearan recuerdos significativos que alcanzarían más allá del viaje.

Día 5:
En su último día, el grupo visitó la Estatua de la Libertad y Ellis Island, reflexionando sobre la importancia cultural e histórica de estos lugares. Usando camisetas iguales de “I heart NY,” los Chamber Singers aprovecharon el momento cantando el “National Anthem” frente a la Estatua de la Libertad. La miembra del coro, Shilah Escobosa admitió que al principio se sintió un poco vergonzosa, pero al final se convirtió en una experiencia genial y memorable, especialmente cuando las personas comenzaron a aplaudir.

También compartió que viajar en el metro de Nueva York fue sorprendentemente divertido. Aunque prefiere el autobús del condado de Orange, disfrutó la experiencia de transportarse como una verdadera “ New Yorker.” Cuando se le preguntó sobre su parte favorita del viaje, Shilah dijo que Central Park se destacó más que todo por lo hermoso y agradable que fue explorarlo.

En general, el viaje a Nueva York fue una experiencia increíble para los Chamber Singers. Desde explorar la ciudad hasta presentarse en Carnegie Hall, los estudiantes no solo crecieron como músicos, sino que también crearon recuerdos significativos con sus compañeros. Este viaje sin duda será uno de los momentos más memorables de su trayectoria en la preparatoria. Además, dejó una impresión en la historia de nuestra escuela, marcando el primer grupo de estudiantes de Anaheim en presentarse en Carnegie Hall.
