Our Puentistas Take On San Diego!

UC Irvine, Cal State Long Beach, USC, Chapman…California is home to many amazing colleges, and these are only a few of the campuses the students in our Puente program have visited! Puente, a program driven towards latinx success in college, offers 2 field trips a year for their students to visit some of the best universities California has to offer. This year, for the junior class of 2027, they traveled to San Diego to visit UC San Diego and San Diego State University. While there, our puentistas were able to experience a personalized college tour from our own Puente alumni. Let’s follow them along and see what they did!

On Thursday, the 26th of February, the students and chaperones met promptly at 7:30am near the front gate of the school to wait for the buses. Upon arrival, they all boarded comfortable charter buses, ready for the journey. 

First, the students went to UC San Diego where they met up with former puentistas Gabby Cerda and Taylor Falt. Taylor, who is majoring in Mechanical Engineering, told us that Puente was able to help her because of its “wonderful community.” She said that it was extremely helpful when she struggled in class and in creating a family for her. Lastly, she told us that she loves it at UC San Diego, describing it as the place she was “meant to be.” She and Gabby were able to answer the students, many questions about the resources offered, and campus life overall! Current Puentista, Hazelle Urieta, told us that although she wasn’t particularly interested in the college, it was beautiful and taught her a lot about the different college systems that are implemented. 

After so much walking around, the students were allowed to go eat lunch, many opting for nearby fast food. After filling their bellies and having some free time to explore on their own, the students were taken back to the bus to head to the second location!

In just a short amount of time, the students made it to San Diego State University. However, this time instead of tour guides, the Puentistas got a scavenger hunt! They were tasked to form groups and take pictures at ten main locations on campus. Once this was completed, they were told to submit the pictures to the chaperones and meet at the bus by 2 pm. The students rushed off in excitement, happy to explore SDSU on their own. 

Current Puentista Jose Borja told us that being able to tour San Diego State University on his own allowed him to immerse himself in the college experience. He enjoyed walking around campus and seeing San Diego State University!

By meet up time, all the students were worn down from the adventure and beating sun, they were happy to board the cool air-conditioned charter bus once more to finally make their way back home. 

With the accompany of the green mountains and soft ocean breeze, our puentistas made it back to our home campus safe and sound. With new information under their belt, they had more options to consider for their nearing senior applications! UC San Diego and San Diego State University are both wonderful colleges that our junior puentistas now have the experience of exploring. Now these puentistas have their senior trips to look forward to, and many have already set their sights on Puente’s grand Norcal trip!

¡Nuestros puentistas se enfrentan a San Diego!

UC Irvine, Cal State Long Beach, USC, Chapman… California alberga muchas universidades increíbles, ¡y estos son solo algunos de los campus que los estudiantes de nuestro programa Puente han visitado! Puente, un programa orientado al éxito universitario de la comunidad latina, ofrece dos excursiones al año para que sus estudiantes visiten algunas de las mejores universidades de California. Este año, para la generación de penúltimo año de 2027, viajaron a San Diego para visitar UC San Diego y la Universidad Estatal de San Diego. Durante su estancia, nuestros estudiantes de Puente disfrutaron de una visita personalizada a la universidad con nuestros exalumnos. ¡Veamos qué hicieron!

El jueves 26 de febrero, los estudiantes y sus acompañantes se reunieron puntualmente a las 7:30 a.m. cerca de la puerta principal de la escuela para esperar los autobuses. Al llegar, todos abordaron cómodos autobuses chárter, listos para el viaje.

Primero, los estudiantes fueron a UC San Diego, donde se reunieron con algunas alumnas de Puente, Gabby Cerda y Taylor Falt. Taylor, quien estudia Ingeniería Mecánica, nos comentó que Puente la ayudó gracias a su “maravillosa comunidad.” Comentó que fue de gran ayuda cuando tuvo dificultades en clase y para formar una familia. Por último, nos comentó que le encanta la UC San Diego, describiéndola como el lugar donde “estaba destinada a estar.” Ella y Gabby pudieron responder a las muchas preguntas de los estudiantes sobre los recursos ofrecidos y la vida en el campus en general. Hazelle Urieta, actual Puentista, nos comentó que, aunque no le interesaba especialmente la universidad, era hermosa y le enseñó mucho sobre los diferentes sistemas universitarios que se implementan.

Después de tanto caminar, los estudiantes pudieron ir a almorzar; muchos optaron por restaurantes de comida rápida cercanos. Después de llenarse la barriga y tener tiempo libre para explorar por su cuenta, los estudiantes regresaron al autobús para dirigirse a la segunda ubicación.

En poco tiempo, los estudiantes llegaron a la Universidad Estatal de San Diego. Sin embargo, esta vez, en lugar de guías turísticos, ¡los Puentistas tuvieron una búsqueda del tesoro! Se les pidió que formaran grupos y tomaran fotos en diez lugares principales del campus. Una vez completado, debían entregar las fotos a los acompañantes y reunirse en el autobús a las 2 p.m. Los estudiantes salieron corriendo, entusiasmados, felices de explorar por su cuenta.

Puentista José Borja nos contó que poder recorrer la Universidad Estatal de San Diego por su cuenta le permitió sumergirse en la experiencia universitaria. Disfrutó de caminar por el campus y ver la Universidad Estatal de San Diego. 

Para la hora de la reunión, todos los estudiantes estaban agotados por la aventura y el sol abrasador, y estaban felices de subirse de nuevo al autobús chárter con aire acondicionado para finalmente regresar a casa.

Con la compañía de las verdes montañas y la suave brisa del mar, nuestros puentistas regresaron sanos y salvos a nuestro campus. Con nueva información, ¡tenían más opciones para considerar para sus próximas solicitudes de ingreso a la universidad! UC San Diego y la Universidad Estatal de San Diego son dos universidades maravillosas que nuestros puentistas de tercer año ahora tienen la experiencia de explorar. Ahora, estos puentistas esperan con ilusión sus viajes de fin de curso, ¡y muchos ya tienen la vista puesta en el gran viaje de Puente al norte de California!
