New York. It’s known as the “concrete jungle where dreams are made of,” but did you know that it’s also home to many prestigious universities where students from all over the world get their education? Ithaca, a city known for its “gorges” scenery due to its numerous waterfalls, holds the biggest Ivy League institution, Cornell University, along with Ithaca College, a performing arts school known for setting up its students for theatrical success. Additionally, Syracuse University, a liberal arts college with reputable D1 sports, is located in Syracuse, New York. Fortunately, students in the Simon Scholars program had the opportunity to tour these wonderful universities. Three of the students from Anaheim, Sophia Fernandez, Samantha Martinez, and Sebastian Viera, are here to share their experience traveling to New York.
Day 1, March 24th, Samantha
Our first day entirely consisted of traveling, but our leaders and the other students made it great and very eventful. This was my first time flying, so I was very nervous when we were finally able to get on our first flight, which was from John Wayne to Dallas. Thankfully, I was sitting next to one of my best friends, Sebastian, who was able to keep me distracted during take off, which made it better than I was expecting. From there, I took a nap, then watched a documentary on Netflix while others around me were also watching movies or TV shows, or they were sleeping. When we finally landed in Dallas, we realized that the gate we were leaving from was farther than we expected from the gate to our final flight. Therefore, once everyone had cleared the plane,we rushed into a landline bus and hoped we would make our next flight from Dallas to Syracuse.
During the last flight, I was much calmer and began watching more movies to keep myself entertained, and was even able to enjoy some complimentary snacks that were given by the flight attendants. It was definitely a longer flight, but to me the seats were more comfortable, and I enjoyed being able to watch “Now You See Me Now You Don’t,” which was a great movie. Meanwhile,Sebastian and Nikki were watching “Bugonia.” When we eventually landed, we headed to the bag pick up area because I, along with Sophia and our leaders, was able to check in our bags for free. After that,we were able to exit the airport and board a bus that Simon Scholars had rented for us that would take us to the hotel. When we finally arrived at our hotel, the Marriott Syracuse Downtown, we checked in and were given the cards to our room. I was paired with Sophia. When we arrived at our room, we placed our clothes in the drawers, then prepared for bed because the next day we would have to be up by 7:45 am.
Day 2, March 25th, Sophia
On the first full day in Syracuse, we all woke up early. Having just gotten there the night before, we were all quite tired. Nevertheless, the excitement and adrenaline woke us up at a bright 7:00. Samantha and I got up and began getting ready immediately. Even though I was a few minutes late, we went down to the hotel restaurant for some breakfast and began our day of exploring immediately after.
The first college we visited was Syracuse. We walked from our hotel to Syracuse, and the moment we got there, everyone was amazed. Syracuse is a big university with many different programs and majors. As a D1 school, school spirit is incredibly important there. Our tour guide took us to many campus hot spots and explained traditions and important school history. This school was not only incredibly exciting but also amazing to be at. The area of the school was beautiful. Our tour guide showed us a picture of the school in the fall, and we were all breathless. One of our chaperones, Yesenia Capelliono, a Director of College Access at the Simon Scholar Program, told us this about experiencing Syracuse with students: “Going on college tours with students is one of my favorite parts of my job. Getting to experience new places alongside them and see things through their eyes makes it really special. At Syracuse University, you could feel the school spirit right away, and it was clear they have strong programs and real support systems for students….”
After grabbing lunch at Syracuse, we took an Uber and headed over to a tour of the Erie Canal Museum. This was an impactful and insightful tour, as so many scholars were able to know a deeper part of US history. This was something that everybody should go to if they are ever in the Syracuse area.
After a long day of walking and exploring, all of the Simon scholars had a one-hour break before dinner. We met at the hotel lobby and walked to the Salt City market.
At dinner, we had a foodie tour of various foods around the world. We enjoyed a very insightful conversation with Yesenia enjoying the yummy food we ate from the market.
We then reflected on our day once we got back to the hotel. After a long day of exploring, we were all tired and fell asleep immediately.
Day 3, March 26th, Sebastian
On the 2nd day in New York, my roommate, Jorge, and I woke up 30 minutes before we had to be downstairs, which was 15 minutes better than the day before. We rushed downstairs and had breakfast, finishing and getting onto the bus by 8:15 am. The bus ride from Syracuse to Ithaca was an hour and 30 minutes, which I used to nap. I woke up to the beautiful city-like scenery of Ithaca moments before we arrived at Ithaca College.
Ithaca College is in a suburban area that looks out to beautiful green mountains. Throughout our tour, we saw the friendly campus culture shine through the smiles on students’ faces. After our tour wrapped up at Ithaca College, we headed towards Cornell University.
At Cornell, we were greeted by a beautiful gorge (with a waterfall) at the entrance to the university. The university consisted of countless tall brick buildings that looked like they were straight out of a Harry Potter movie. Our tour guide, Elie, was an international student from Rwanda who said he chose Cornell for its diversity. We learned about the campus’s traditions and superstitions. Specifically, “Dragon Day” which is when the architecture department and the engineering department compete against each other to see who can build the best statue to parade around the school. The architecture students create a huge drag, while the engineering students create a phoenix. The architecture students have been reigning champions ever since the tradition started, hence the name, “Dragon Day.”
After our tour, we met a Simon Scholar alumni that works for admissions as a student at Cornell. He gave us valuable insight into the schools’ different colleges and told us not to be intimidated by the selective admissions, encouraging all of us to apply. I think I can speak for all of us Simon Scholars when I say that we left Cornell in love and inspired to apply. Nikki Lu, a friend of mine and Western High School Simon Scholar, said,“This trip gave me that final push to apply in the fall.”
Day 4, March 27th, Samantha
After all our adventures, we knew it was time to head back home, so we all packed up after our trip from Cornell. When we were told that we would have to be up at 3:45 am to catch our flight to Dallas, we all thought of pulling all-nighters. Therefore, most of us stayed up talking to one another or doing homework. We eventually all found out that the hotel was haunted, by having to contend with hearing things on the outside of our doors. Once we were all packed and set, we headed to the front desk and asked an employee there where he had told us that he had not personally experienced anything but had also heard of things happening from his coworkers.
Once we arrived at Dallas airport, right away we were able to stop at a little snack store and pick up breakfast that would be able to keep us full throughout both our flights. When we were finally on the plane, most of us slept through the entire duration, not having gotten any sleep. I personally slept through takeoff. When I finally woke up, Sebastian, Nikki, and I all watched Weapons Together. It was a great movie. We then had to make the same rush to catch our flight to John Wayne, but thankfully, this time we had time to spare. When we boarded our last plane, everyone mostly did their own thing. Then finally we landed back in California, everyone and I were happy to finally be able to head back home and be able to shower, eat, and sleep. But overall, the Simon Scholars and I all agree that this was an amazing experience and if we could do it again, we definitely would.

Es conocida como la “jungla de cemento de la que están hechos los sueños,” pero ¿sabías que también alberga muchas universidades de prestigio donde estudiantes de todo el mundo reciben su educación? Ithaca, una ciudad famosa por sus “impresionantes” paisajes gracias a sus numerosas cascadas, es la sede de la universidad más grande de la Ivy League: la Universidad de Cornell. Allí se encuentra también el Ithaca College, una escuela de artes escénicas reconocida por preparar a sus estudiantes para alcanzar el éxito en el teatro. Además, la Universidad de Syracuse es una institución de artes liberales con un reputado programa deportivo de la División I (D1). Está ubicada en la ciudad de Syracuse, Nueva York. Afortunadamente, los estudiantes del programa Simon Scholars tuvieron la oportunidad de recorrer estas maravillosas universidades. Día 1, 24 de marzo, Samantha
Nuestro primer día consistió completamente en viajar, pero aun así nuestros líderes y los otros estudiantes lo hicieron genial y muy emocionante. Era la primera vez que volaba, así que estaba muy nerviosa cuando finalmente pudimos abordar nuestro primer vuelo, que era de John Wayne a Dallas. Afortunadamente, estaba sentada junto a uno de mis mejores amigos, Sebastian, quien pudo distraerme durante el despegue, lo que hizo que fuera mejor de lo que esperaba. Después de eso, tomé una siesta y luego vi un documental en Netflix, mientras que otros a mi alrededor también estaban viendo películas o programas de televisión o estaban durmiendo. Cuando finalmente aterrizamos en Dallas, nos dimos cuenta de que la puerta de la que salía nuestro siguiente vuelo estaba más lejos de lo que esperábamos. Por lo tanto, una vez que todos bajamos del avión, nos apresuramos a tomar un autobús interno con la esperanza de alcanzar nuestro siguiente vuelo de Dallas a Syracuse.

Mientras tanto, Sebastian y Nikki estaban viendo “Bugonia.” Cuando finalmente aterrizamos, nos dirigimos al área de recogida de equipaje porque yo, junto con Sophia y nuestros líderes, pude documentar nuestras maletas gratis. Después de eso, salimos del aeropuerto y abordamos un autobús que Simon Scholars había rentado para nosotros, el cual nos llevaría al hotel. Cuando finalmente llegamos a nuestro hotel, el Marriott Syracuse Downtown, hicimos el check-in y luego nos dieron las llaves de nuestra habitación; me tocó compartir con Sophia. Cuando llegamos a la habitación, guardamos nuestra ropa en los cajones y luego nos preparamos para dormir porque al día siguiente tendríamos que levantarnos a las 7:45.
Día 2, 25 de marzo, Sophia
En el primer día completo en Syracuse, todos nos despertamos temprano. Habíamos llegado la noche anterior, así que estábamos muy cansados. Pero la emoción y la adrenalina nos ayudaron a levantarnos a las 7:00 am. Samantha y yo nos levantamos y empezamos a arreglarnos de inmediato. Aunque llegué unos minutos tarde, bajamos al restaurante del hotel para desayunar y después empezamos nuestro día de exploración.
La primera universidad que visitamos fue Syracuse. Caminamos desde el hotel hasta la universidad y cuando llegamos, todos estaban impresionados. Syracuse es una universidad grande con muchos programas y carreras. Como es una escuela de división 1, el espíritu escolar es muy importante. Nuestro guía nos llevó a muchos lugares del campus y nos explicó tradiciones e historia importantes. La escuela era muy bonita y fue increíble estar allí. El área también era muy hermosa. El guía nos enseñó fotos de la universidad en otoño y todos quedamos sorprendidos. Una de nuestras acompañantes, Yesenia Capelliono, directora de acceso universitario en el programa Simon Scholars, nos dijo esto sobre la experiencia en Syracuse con estudiantes: “Ir a visitas universitarias con estudiantes es una de mis partes favoritas de mi trabajo. Poder conocer nuevos lugares con ellos y ver las cosas desde su perspectiva lo hace muy especial.” En la Universidad de Syracuse, se podía sentir el espíritu escolar de inmediato, y era claro que tienen programas fuertes y sistemas de apoyo reales para los estudiantes….”
Después de comer en Syracuse, tomamos un Uber y fuimos al museo del Canal Erie. Fue una visita muy interesante porque aprendimos más sobre la historia de Estados Unidos. Es un lugar que todos deberían visitar si van a Syracuse.
Después de un día largo caminando, todos los Simon Scholars tuvimos una hora de descanso antes de la cena. Nos encontramos en el lobby del hotel y caminamos al Salt City Market.
En la cena, probamos diferentes comidas de varias partes del mundo. También tuvimos buenas conversaciones con Yesenia mientras disfrutamos la comida.
Luego regresamos al hotel y reflexionamos sobre el día. Después de todo, estábamos muy cansados y nos dormimos rápidamente.
Día 3, 26 de marzo, Sebastian
En nuestro segundo día en Nueva York, mi compañero de habitación, Jorge, y yo nos despertamos 30 minutos antes de la hora en que debíamos estar abajo, lo cual supuso una mejora de 15 minutos con respecto al día anterior. Bajamos apresuradamente, desayunamos y logramos terminar y subir al autobús antes de las 8:15 am. El trayecto en autobús desde Syracuse hasta Ithaca duró una hora y media, tiempo que aproveché para tomar una siesta. Me desperté ante el hermoso paisaje urbano de Ithaca, justo unos instantes antes de llegar al Ithaca College.
Ithaca College se encuentra en una zona suburbana con vistas a unas hermosas montañas verdes. A lo largo de nuestro recorrido, pudimos ver cómo la amigable cultura del campus se reflejaba en las sonrisas de los rostros de los estudiantes. Una vez concluida nuestra visita al Ithaca College, nos dirigimos hacia la Universidad de Cornell.
En Cornell, fuimos recibidos por un hermoso desfiladero (con cascada) situado justo a la entrada de la universidad. El recinto universitario estaba compuesto por innumerables edificios altos de ladrillo que parecían sacados directamente de una película de Harry Potter. Nuestro guía turístico, Elie, era un estudiante internacional proveniente de Rwanda, quien nos contó que había elegido Cornell precisamente por su diversidad. Aprendimos sobre las tradiciones y supersticiones del campus; en particular, sobre el “Dragon Day” (Día del Dragón), un evento en el que los departamentos de Arquitectura e Ingeniería compiten entre sí para ver quién logra construir la mejor estatua para desfilar con ella por el recinto universitario. Los estudiantes de Arquitectura crean un dragón gigantesco, mientras que los de Ingeniería construyen un fénix. Los estudiantes de Arquitectura han ostentado el título de campeones indiscutibles desde que comenzó esta tradición; de ahí, precisamente, viene el nombre de “Dragon Day.”
Tras finalizar nuestra visita guiada, conocimos a un exalumno del programa Simon Scholars que trabaja en el departamento de admisiones de Cornell mientras cursa sus estudios allí. Nos ofreció información muy valiosa sobre las distintas facultades y escuelas que conforman la universidad, y nos aconsejó no dejarnos intimidar por la gran selectividad de su proceso de admisión, animándonos a todos a presentar nuestra solicitud. Creo que hablo en nombre de todos los Simon Scholars al afirmar que nos marchamos de Cornell completamente enamorados del lugar e inspirados para aplicar. Nikki Lu, una amiga mía y Western High School Simon Scholar, dijo “This trip gave me that final push to apply in the fall.”
Día 4, 27 de marzo, Samantha
Después de todas nuestras aventuras, sabíamos que era momento de regresar a casa, así que todos empacamos después de nuestro viaje a Cornell. Cuando nos dijeron que tendríamos que levantarnos a las 3:45 am para tomar nuestro vuelo a Dallas, todos pensamos en desvelarnos. Cuando finalmente estuvimos en el avión, la mayoría dormimos durante todo el vuelo porque no habíamos dormido nada; yo incluso me dormí durante el despegue. Cuando desperté, Sebastian, Nikki y yo vimos “Weapons” juntos; fue una gran película. Luego tuvimos que apresurarnos de nuevo para alcanzar nuestro vuelo a John Wayne, pero afortunadamente esta vez tuvimos tiempo de sobra. Cuando abordamos nuestro último avión, cada quien hizo lo suyo. Finalmente aterrizamos de regreso en California; todos, incluido yo, estábamos felices de poder regresar a casa y ducharnos, comer y dormir. Pero en general, los estudiantes de Simon Scholars y yo coincidimos en que fue una experiencia increíble y que, si pudiéramos repetirla, definitivamente lo haríamos.
