Prom is one of the most anticipated events for high schoolers. Although most don’t know, Prom (shortened for Promenade) was once a debutante style event for college students that attended Ivy Leagues in the 18th century. It first started off as a parade for high class students. In the late 19th century it moved from colleges to high schools as once again a debutant but this time for middle class students to practice grace. Social media and teenage movies changed prom for future generations with it being an event that everyone looks forward to. It marks the end of the school year and a final memorable celebration with friends before graduation. Let’s take a look at the making of the prom theme and some behind the scene action along with how students feel about this year’s theme. 

First we will hear from our senior class president and vice president Dayani Para and Ariana Rubalcava about how the prom theme was developed. They shared how hiding the theme “was very hard at first, but as time  went on and it was closer to revealing the actual theme, it was more suspenseful and fun knowing that we knew the theme but other people didn’t.”  Another way they hid the theme was by “making fake advertisements for a different theme. I would accidentally accidentally open it in front of people. So a lot of people would think they knew the theme which led a lot of people to think it was enchanted forest, because we were saying that it was right. So we kind of like manipulated people.”  When it came to them choosing the theme we learned that they had “a discussion over Thanksgiving break and in the beginning of the school year. We surveyed the school, our seniors and juniors, and we asked them what they wanted to see for the theme and so we took that, and we personalized it in a way to make it fit what we wanted but also what the school. It was a mixture of everything that people wanted. But not a typical name that you would see anywhere, we made it our own, basically.”

Senior student Carlos Ramirez shares that although he is not going to Prom because of Coachella, “I like the prom theme. I always wanted to have a prom theme to be masquerade, and since I was planning homecoming this year, I like the theme, but I just knew that’s not a homecoming theme. So that’s why they didn’t choose it, and now seeing that this theme is somewhat, like, half masquerade. I do like it, it’s pretty cute. The way that the junior class president, Dayani, was explaining it to me, is that it’s a 1920s masquerade Hollywood ball. So, like, I think that’s pretty cute. And then anyone could dress however they want. Prom is like a night for you to show off, whatever you want to show off.”

Overall, this year’s prom theme created excitement and curiosity throughout the school. From the secret planning and fake hints by student leaders to the reactions from students, the process showed how much effort goes into creating a memorable night. With the Art Deco Ball theme bringing together elements of masquerade elegance and 1920s Hollywood glamour, students are already imagining their outfits and looking forward to the celebration. As the school year comes to a close, prom will serve as a special night for friends to dress up, dance, and make lasting memories before graduation.

El prom es uno de los eventos más esperados por los estudiantes de secundaria. Aunque muchos no lo saben, el prom (que viene de la palabra promenade) fue originalmente un evento tipo debutante para estudiantes universitarios que asistían a universidades Ivy League en el siglo 18. Al principio empezó como un desfile para estudiantes de clase alta. A finales del siglo, pasó de las universidades a las escuelas secundarias, otra vez como un evento debutante, pero esta vez para estudiantes de clase media para practicar la elegancia y los buenos modales. Las redes sociales y las películas para adolescentes cambiaron el prom para las nuevas generaciones, convirtiéndose en un evento que todos esperan porque marca el final del año escolar y una última celebración memorable con amigos antes de la graduación. Ahora vamos a ver cómo se creó el tema del prom, algunas cosas que pasaron detrás de escenas y cómo se sienten los estudiantes sobre el tema de este año.

Primero escucharemos a la presidenta y vicepresidenta de la clase de último año, Dayani Para y Ariana Rubalcava, sobre cómo se desarrolló el tema del prom. Ellas compartieron que esconder el tema “fue muy difícil al principio, pero cuando pasó el tiempo y se acercaba el momento de revelar el tema real, se volvió más emocionante y divertido saber que nosotros lo sabíamos pero otras personas no.” Otra forma en que escondieron el tema fue “haciendo anuncios falsos para un tema diferente. Yo los abría accidentalmente enfrente de otras personas. Entonces mucha gente pensaba que ya sabía el tema, lo que hizo que muchos creyeran que era un bosque encantado, porque nosotros decíamos que sí era. Así que básicamente manipulamos un poco a la gente.” Cuando llegó el momento de escoger el tema, aprendimos que tuvieron “una discusión durante las vacaciones de Acción de Gracias y al comienzo del año escolar. Hicimos una encuesta en la escuela, a los estudiantes de último y penúltimo año, y les preguntamos qué querían ver como tema. Tomamos esas ideas y las personalizamos para que encajaran con lo que queríamos, pero también con lo que quería la escuela.” También dijeron que “era una mezcla de todo lo que la gente quería, pero no un nombre típico que verías en cualquier lugar. Básicamente lo hicimos nuestro.”

El estudiante de último año Carlos Ramirez comparte que aunque no irá al prom por ir a Coachella, le gusta el tema. Él dijo: “Me gusta el tema del prom. Siempre quise que el tema fuera de máscaras. Cuando estaba planeando el homecoming este año, me gustaba el tema, pero sabía que no era un tema para homecoming. Por eso no lo escogieron. Ahora que veo que este tema es como mitad de máscaras, sí me gusta, está muy bonito.” También explicó: “La forma en que Dayani, la presidenta de la clase junior, me lo explicó fue que es como un baile de Hollywood de los años 1920 con máscaras. Creo que está muy bonito. Además, cualquiera puede vestirse como quiera. El prom es como una noche para mostrar lo que tú quieras mostrar.”

En general, el tema del prom de este año creó emoción y curiosidad en toda la escuela. Desde la planificación secreta y las pistas falsas de los líderes estudiantiles hasta las reacciones de los estudiantes, el proceso mostró cuánto esfuerzo se necesita para crear una noche memorable. Con el tema Art Deco Ball, que combina la elegancia de las máscaras con el glamor de Hollywood de los años 1920, los estudiantes ya están imaginando sus atuendos y esperando la celebración. Mientras el año escolar llega a su fin, el prom será una noche especial para que los amigos se vistan elegantes, bailen y creen recuerdos que durarán antes de la graduación.
