Graduation season is just around the corner for seniors here at Anaheim High School. Hi! My name is Emily Valdez, and I’m a senior this year. I’m involved in programs like Journalism, ASB, Puente, and more. As we reach the end of second semester, many seniors are feeling a mix of emotions, some are thinking “We’re free!” while others are trying to cherish every moment, catch up on late work, or prepare for AP exams. Personally, I feel a mix of both excitement and pressure, as I get ready for my AP exams while also trying to enjoy my final weeks of high school. In this article, I’ll reflect on my senior year, share experiences from other seniors, and highlight important upcoming events and deadlines.

During my senior year, I challenged myself by taking two AP classes, AP English Literature and AP Government, while also starting my day early with a zero-period Journalism class. It’s a class I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I do now. Alongside that, I’ve stayed involved in ASB and college readiness programs like Educational Talent Search (ETS) and Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP). Although I focused heavily on academics this year and didn’t get as involved socially as I hoped, I still made time for my dance group outside of school and kept up with responsibilities at home.

I also spoke with our Class President, Carlos Ramirez, who shared key events that seniors should keep in mind. One of the most anticipated is Grad Nite on May 17, where seniors will spend the day at Disney from 8 a.m. until 2 a.m. the next morning. Another meaningful tradition is the Grad Walk, where seniors return to their elementary or junior high schools in their cap and gown to inspire younger students. Seniors can also attend the AUHSD District Senior Sunset on May 1 at Handel Stadium, featuring food, bouncy houses, and time to connect with seniors across the district. Anaheim High will host its own Senior Sunset on May 15 at the softball field, with snacks, a possible Kona Ice truck, and a movie night, where students can also bring their own picnic. Graduation practice will take place on May 20 at 9:30 a.m. on the track, where students will receive their cap, gown, and tickets. Finally, graduation will be held on May 21 at 10 a.m. at Handel Stadium, with seniors encouraged to arrive by 8:30 a.m.

To get more perspectives, I interviewed several seniors about their experiences this year and their plans for the future. Karla Gonzalez Bernal shared that her senior year was full of both ups and downs, but ultimately filled with accomplishments and memorable moments. Looking ahead, she said, “Anything can happen, because we can’t control the outcome, but we can control what we do in the meantime.” She plans to pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering and hopes to make choices that will benefit her future and make her loved ones proud.

I also spoke with Ashley Reyes and Kate Ibasco, who both described their senior year as stressful but meaningful. Kate shared that her favorite memory was becoming Homecoming Queen and participating in Senior Sunrise. Ashley said her favorite moments came from senior activities and preparing for the next chapter in her education. For the future, Kate plans to attend community college, join the swim and dive team, and transfer to a university after two years. Ashley shared that she is still figuring out her path but is excited to continue her education, whether at a community college or a university.

Another senior, Kayla Quiroz, reflected on her experience in a more personal way. She shared that when people talk about senior year, they often focus on the events, but for her, it was more about growth. Kayla explained that she has changed a lot as a person and often finds herself reminiscing about things that once felt permanent but are now just memories. She said her favorite experiences came from being part of AIME, Puente, and Band, and expressed gratitude for her teachers and advisors who helped shape who she is today. Looking ahead, Kayla hopes that the next chapter of her life does not feel rushed. She wants to take in the small moments, continue growing, and succeed alongside a small circle of friends and her chosen family.

Los estudiantes también pueden asistir al AUHSD District Senior Sunset el 1 de mayo en el Handel Stadium, que contará con comida, inflables y tiempo para convivir con estudiantes de todo el distrito. Anaheim High también organizará su propio Senior Sunset el 15 de mayo en el campo de sóftbol, con bocadillos, posiblemente un camión de Kona Ice y una noche de cine, donde los estudiantes también pueden llevar su propia comida tipo picnic. Para obtener más perspectivas, entrevisté a varios estudiantes de último año sobre sus experiencias de este año y sus planes para el futuro. Quiere disfrutar los pequeños momentos, seguir creciendo y tener éxito junto a un pequeño grupo de amigos y su familia elegida.
