On campus, there is a program that is well-known and highly recognized by students. This program has supported many first-generation students and inspired them to pursue a university education or a career they’re passionate about. I’ve been part of the Puente Program for all four years of high school, and it has opened my eyes to many opportunities I didn’t even know existed.

Puente isn’t only found on high school campuses—it’s also present at different universities and, more recently, in some junior highs within the AUHSD district. Students take this class as their English course, but it’s much more than that. Puente includes several college-readiness components and offers assignments that help students learn about themselves, explore new ideas, and grow as learners.

To explain this program in better detail, I asked one of our Puente teachers, Mrs.

King, a few questions. First I asked her, As a teacher, how has PUENTE shaped the way you work with students?

“Puente is a program sponsored by the University California, Berkeley. Training and workshops are with nationally acclaimed educators, writers, and curriculum developers. I have been part of the statewide anchor team assisting with high school curriculum development for 15 years. We have a team of support, Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Cuellar support students with college field trips, college applications, scholarships, and financial aid. We work together to build a community of college bound students who work together to help first generation college students negotiate higher level education.”

I then asked her what makes PUENTE students stand out in the classroom?

“The students collaborate, work on communication skills, have a growth mindset, and thrive on rigor. Many students have dreams of attending college and accept it takes a work ethic of studying, goal setting, time management, and character. They value each other, responsibility, faculty, honesty, and reliability. At the core of the program, Puente students are inspired to give back to their community, celebrate their cultural backgrounds, and affirm their identity and families.”

And lastly I asked her how building relationships plays a role in PUENTE’s success?

“The faculty and parents are the foundation for support of the Puente program and Puente students.  The relationships between families, students, and staff creates an academic and social community that lasts long after high school. The students build lifelong friends who support one another and promote the value of education with the younger generations. Many of our Alumni Puente students continue to support our current students and come back to share their journeys of establishing successful careers and graduating from universities. Our program stays connected with our Puente college students and they become our tour guides when we visit their universities!”

As you can see this program not only supports and helps the students but also the teachers. Mrs. King has been teaching for 24 years and has enjoyed her career here at Anaheim High School. As one of her former students she helped me open my eyes to new possibilities and new ways to express myself. I will be forever grateful that I took the opportunity to be a part of this program. I am also a part of the program cabinet as class representative. Within this position I am able to create events for my class and support other events that are being planned for the program as a whole.

En el campus existe un programa que es muy conocido y altamente reconocido por los estudiantes. Este programa ha apoyado a muchos estudiantes de primera generación y los ha inspirado a seguir una educación universitaria o una carrera que les apasione. He sido parte del Programa Puente durante los cuatro años de la preparatoria, y me ha abierto los ojos a muchas oportunidades que ni siquiera sabía que existían.

Puente no solo se encuentra en las preparatorias; también está presente en diferentes universidades y, más recientemente, en algunas secundarias dentro del distrito AUHSD. Los estudiantes toman esta clase como su curso de inglés, pero es mucho más que eso. Puente incluye varios componentes de preparación universitaria y ofrece actividades que ayudan a los estudiantes a conocerse mejor, explorar nuevas ideas y crecer como aprendices.

Para explicar este programa con mayor detalle, le hice algunas preguntas a una de nuestras maestras de Puente, la Sra. King.

Primero le pregunté: Como maestra, ¿cómo ha influido PUENTE en la manera en que trabaja con los estudiantes?

“Puente es un programa patrocinado por la Universidad de California, Berkeley. La capacitación y los talleres se realizan con educadores, escritores y desarrolladores de currículo reconocidos a nivel nacional. He sido parte del equipo ancla estatal ayudando con el desarrollo del currículo de preparatoria durante 15 años. Contamos con un equipo de apoyo: la Sra. Allen y la Sra. Cuellar apoyan a los estudiantes con excursiones universitarias, solicitudes universitarias, becas y ayuda financiera. Trabajamos juntas para construir una comunidad de estudiantes con metas universitarias que se apoyan entre sí para ayudar a los estudiantes de primera generación a desenvolverse en la educación superior.”

Luego le pregunté qué es lo que hace que los estudiantes de PUENTE se destaquen en el salón de clases.

“Los estudiantes colaboran, trabajan en sus habilidades de comunicación, tienen una mentalidad de crecimiento y prosperan en un ambiente académico riguroso. Muchos estudiantes sueñan con asistir a la universidad y aceptan que esto requiere una fuerte ética de trabajo que incluye estudio, establecimiento de metas, manejo del tiempo y carácter. Valoran a los demás, la responsabilidad, al personal docente, la honestidad y la confiabilidad. En el centro del programa, los estudiantes de Puente se inspiran a retribuir a su comunidad, celebrar sus antecedentes culturales y afirmar su identidad y sus familias.”

Por último, le pregunté cómo la construcción de relaciones influye en el éxito de PUENTE.

“El personal docente y los padres son la base del apoyo del programa Puente y de sus estudiantes. Las relaciones entre familias, estudiantes y personal crean una comunidad académica y social que perdura mucho después de la preparatoria. Los estudiantes forman amistades para toda la vida, se apoyan mutuamente y promueven el valor de la educación entre las generaciones más jóvenes. Muchos exalumnos de Puente continúan apoyando a nuestros estudiantes actuales y regresan para compartir sus experiencias al establecer carreras exitosas y graduarse de universidades. Nuestro programa nos mantiene en contacto con nuestros estudiantes universitarios de Puente, ¡y ellos se convierten en nuestros guías cuando visitamos sus universidades!”

Como se puede ver, este programa no solo apoya y ayuda a los estudiantes, sino también a los maestros. La Sra. King ha enseñado durante 24 años y ha disfrutado su carrera aquí en Anaheim High School. Como una de sus exalumnas, me ayudó a abrir los ojos a nuevas posibilidades y a nuevas formas de expresarse. Siempre estaré agradecida de haber aprovechado la oportunidad de ser parte de este programa. También formó parte del gabinete del programa como representante de la clase; en esta posición puedo crear eventos para mi clase y apoyar otros eventos que se están planeando para el programa en general.
