What is Key Club?

Have you ever spent an entire day screaming on roller coasters and competing against other groups to see who is packed with the most spirit? That’s a specialty for Key Club! Key Club is a well-established student organization dedicated to serving local communities. For nearly 100 years, it has empowered students to make a difference through service, while also building character and developing leadership skills. This student-led organization has a strong presence across California, Hawaii, and Nevada. Each state is filled with schools that offer this club. Service, however, is not the only highlight of Key Club. Members also enjoy a variety of exciting events, including Fall Rally South (FRS)! 

Fall Rally South is an annual tradition where Key Clubs from different regions come together for a full day at Six Flags, riding roller coasters and competing in spirited challenges. Throughout the day different divisions, typically four to six, face off to showcase their club pride. Members chant enthusiastically to earn points from judges, creating an atmosphere full of energy and excitement. 

Last Year’s FRS

Anaheim High School’s Key Club falls into Division 30 South (D30S), the Suns! So far, they have committed to over 20,000 hours of community service! As one of the biggest divisions in southern California, they were met with high expectations, making others turn their heads when they saw their signature bright yellow color in the park.

Last year, D30S took the win at the final spirit session under the leadership of Devin Le defeating their arch rivals, the Division 04 North Otters. The Suns and Otters are known for their competitive spirit. At FRS they fought for the loudest chants, and outside of FRS, they competed for the most service hours. The Suns won both. Although the Suns and the Otters are in constant rivalry, they have led numerous joint projects together that demonstrate their even stronger passion for service. This year, the Sun’s biggest competition was the Division 37 East Jellyfish and they were ready to make an example out of them, just like they have with the otters. 

Events of the Day

Last year, Anaheim Key Club sent a total of eight members to Fall Rally South. This year, that number doubled, with sixteen members in attendance, all of whom reported having an amazing time! Fall Rally South begins bright and early, with members expected to meet at Garden Grove Park by 5:30 a.m. to board the buses on time. 

From the moment they arrive at the park, members are surrounded by an energetic sea of divisions proudly representing their teams through colorful T-shirts and coordinated outfits. Decked out in yellow skirts, face paint, and spirit sticks, Division 30 South was more than ready to make the trip. After a quick group photo at the entrance gates, members were released into the park to enjoy as many rides as possible before Six Flags opened to the public.

Throughout the park, small groups of friends could be seen walking around and engaging in friendly chant battles with other divisions. One popular cheer begins with, “Hey (division symbol), how do you feel?!” prompting the opposing division to respond with a chant of their own. Claudia Quintero, who attended Fall Rally South for the first time this year, told us that before she attended she was nervous because it was all new to her. When asked to share her experience, she said that she made some of her “favorite memories” and “had a blast!”

 With Division 30 South’s competition scheduled as the final event of the day, members were free to enjoy the park. Just as long as they conserved their voices for later! By around 4:00 p.m., all of D30S began heading toward Gearworks Theater in preparation for the competition.

The Long-Awaited Spirit Battle

As the Suns made their way to Gearworks Theater, they were reminded of the hours of practice they’ve invested to their cheers at the numerous spirit sessions they held.

The second the divisions stepped foot into Gearworks Theater, the competition had already begun. On the very left, Division 37E Jellyfish, filled up the seats with purple shine. To the right, the D30N Rhinos were stomping away, shaking up their fellow competitors, the Division 28S Seamonkeys. Towards the back, D21W Hippos and D18E Cows were starving to compete. At the very front, shining brighter than ever, the Suns lit up the whole stadium taking up the most space. They were ready, cheering at every turn the District Governor, Charlize Lin and her trusty treasurer, Taye Sangkhae made. 

Along with the spirit battle, an auction that offered up district board members like fellow Sun, Devin Le, Membership Development and Education Chair or the District’s News Editor Crystal Le were available. Throughout the chants, the Jellyfish made a splash at the auction, buying almost everyone there was to offer through the money they fundraised for the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). Realizing the Jellyfish’s potential, the Suns knew they had to step up their game and lock in. 

As the first round of chants concluded, it was time for the judges to deliberate the three clubs that would make it on to the second and final round. A decision was reached, the judges asked for a drum roll and revealed the… JELLYFISH were the first division to make it past the first round. Listening attentively, the Suns sprung out their seats once they were announced as the.. second division to make it pass the first round! Finally, the Rhinos’ rumbling was heard nice and clear making them the third ones to move onto the second round. 

Before the second round began, the divisions congratulated one another with sportsmanship cheers like “S-U-P-E-R SUPER STAR IS WHAT YOU ARE! SUPER SUPER WHAT? SUPER SUPER STAR!” and “AYE YOU ATE THAT IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE THAT!”

The second round began with both the Jellyfish and Rhinos making a strong impression that could be heard even among the Six Flags’ riders’ screams. It was time for the Suns to give it their all. The Suns shun bright at the beginning of the round but lost their momentum towards the second verse with a couple Suns mumbling. Acknowledging their mistake, the Suns were determined to finish strong. The Suns waited for the results with high hopes anticipating a victory. Unfortunately, the Jellyfish’s spirit was too strong, stealing the show. Spirits were down among D30S Suns, but they knew they were winners in their hearts.

¿Qué es Key Club?

¿Alguna vez has pasado un día entero gritando en montañas rusas y compitiendo contra otros grupos para ver quién tiene más entusiasmo? ¡Esa es una de las especialidades de Key Club! Key Club es una organización estudiantil consolidada dedicada a servir a las comunidades locales. Durante casi 100 años, ha empoderado a los estudiantes para que marquen la diferencia a través del servicio, al mismo tiempo que desarrollan su carácter y sus habilidades de liderazgo. Fall Rally South del año pasado

El Key Club de Anaheim High School pertenece a la División 30 Sur, ¡los Suns! ¡Hasta el momento, han acumulado más de 20,000 horas de servicio comunitario! Como una de las divisiones más grandes del sur de California, tenían grandes expectativas, lo que hizo que muchos se fijaran en ellos al ver su característico color amarillo brillante.

El año pasado, la D30S se llevó la victoria en la sesión final de animación bajo el liderazgo de Devin Le, derrotando a sus archirrivales, los Otters de la División 04 Norte. Los Suns y los Otters son conocidos por su espíritu competitivo. En el Fall Rally South, lucharon por los cánticos más ruidosos, y fuera del evento, compitieron por la mayor cantidad de horas de servicio. Los Suns ganaron en ambos casos. Aunque los Suns y los Otters están en constante rivalidad, han liderado numerosos proyectos conjuntos que demuestran su aún mayor pasión por el servicio. Este año, la mayor competencia de los Suns fue la División 37 Este Jellyfish, y estaban listos para darles una lección, tal como lo hicieron con los Otters.

Eventos del día

El año pasado, el Key Club de Anaheim envió un total de ocho miembros al Fall Rally South. Este año, ese número se duplicó, con dieciséis miembros presentes, ¡quienes informaron haber pasado un tiempo increíble! El Fall Rally South comienza muy temprano, y se espera que los miembros se reúnan en Garden Grove Park a las 5:30 a. m. para abordar los autobuses a tiempo. Desde el momento en que llegan al parque, los miembros están rodeados por un mar de energía de las divisiones que representan con orgullo a sus equipos con camisetas coloridas y atuendos coordinados. Ataviadas con faldas amarillas, pintura facial y bastones de animación, la División 30 Sur estaba más que lista para la excursión. Después de una rápida foto grupal en la entrada, los miembros fueron liberados en el parque para disfrutar de tantas atracciones como fuera posible antes de que Six Flags abriera al público.

Por todo el parque, se podían ver pequeños grupos de amigos caminando y participando en amistosas batallas de cánticos con otras divisiones. Un cántico popular comienza con: “¡Oye (símbolo de la división), ¿cómo te sientes?!”, lo que provoca que la división contraria responda con un cántico propio. Claudia Quintero, quien asistió al Fall Rally South por primera vez este año, nos contó que antes de asistir estaba nerviosa porque todo era nuevo para ella. Cuando se le preguntó sobre su experiencia, dijo que creó algunos de sus “recuerdos favoritos” y que “¡se divirtió muchísimo!”

Como la competencia de la División 30 Sur estaba programada como el último evento del día, los miembros pudieron disfrutar del parque. ¡Siempre y cuando conservaran sus voces para más tarde! Alrededor de las 4:00 p.m., todos los miembros de D30S comenzaron a dirigirse al Teatro Gearworks para prepararse para la competencia.

La esperada batalla de espíritu

Mientras los Suns se dirigían al Teatro Gearworks, recordaron las horas de práctica que habían invertido en sus cánticos durante las numerosas sesiones de animación. En el instante en que las divisiones pusieron un pie en el Teatro Gearworks, la competencia ya había comenzado. A la izquierda, la División 37E Jellyfish llenó los asientos con un brillo púrpura. A la derecha, los D30N Rhinos pisoteaban con fuerza, intimidando a sus competidores, los D28S Sea Monkeys. Hacia la parte de atrás, los D21W Hippos y los D18E Cows estaban ansiosos por competir. En la parte delantera, brillando más que nunca, los Suns iluminaron todo el estadio, ocupando la mayor parte del espacio. Estaban listos, animando en cada momento a la Gobernadora del Distrito, Charlize Lin, y a su fiel tesorera, Taye Sangkhae. Además de la batalla de porras, se llevó a cabo una subasta en la que se ofrecían miembros de la junta directiva del distrito, como Sun, Devin Le, presidente de Desarrollo de Membresía y Educación, o Crystal Le, editora de noticias del distrito. Entre los cánticos, el equipo de las Medusas causó sensación en la subasta, comprando casi todo lo que se ofrecía con el dinero que habían recaudado para el Programa de Trauma Pediátrico (PTP). Al darse cuenta del potencial de las Medusas, los Suns supieron que tenían que esforzarse al máximo y concentrarse.

Al concluir la primera ronda de cánticos, llegó el momento de que los jueces deliberaran a los tres clubes que pasarían a la segunda y última ronda. Se llegó a una decisión, los jueces pidieron un redoble de tambores y revelaron que las Medusas fueron la primera división en pasar a la siguiente ronda. Escuchando atentamente, los Suns saltaron de sus asientos al ser anunciados como la segunda división en pasar a la siguiente ronda. Finalmente, el rugido de los Rinocerontes se escuchó fuerte y claro, convirtiéndolos en los terceros en avanzar a la segunda ronda.

Antes de que comenzara la segunda ronda, las divisiones se felicitaron mutuamente con vítores deportivos como: “¡S-U-P-E-R, SUPER ESTRELLA ES LO QUE ERES! ¿SUPER SUPER QUÉ? ¡SUPER ESTRELLA!” y “¡LO HICISTE GENIAL, ES HORA DE CELEBRAR!”.

La segunda ronda comenzó con las Medusas y los Rinocerontes causando una fuerte impresión que se podía escuchar incluso entre los gritos de los visitantes de Six Flags. Era el momento de que los Suns dieran lo mejor de sí. Los Suns brillaron con fuerza al comienzo de la ronda, pero perdieron impulso hacia la segunda estrofa, con algunos de ellos murmurando. Reconociendo su error, los Suns estaban decididos a terminar con fuerza. Esperaron los resultados con grandes expectativas, anticipando una victoria. Desafortunadamente, el espíritu de las Medusas era demasiado fuerte y se robaron el protagonismo. El ánimo decayó entre los Suns de D30S, pero sabían que eran ganadores en sus corazones.
