   Si no sabes qué es el Northgate Market, no te preocupes, yo te lo explicaré. Para comenzar, Northgate González es una cadena familiar de supermercados mexicanos auténticos en el sur de California, conocida por sus frutas y verduras frescas, carnes, productos de panadería y platillos preparados como tacos y tamales. Es una experiencia de “mercado” con un enfoque en la tradición, la comunidad y la cultura. 

¿Quién es don Miguel González Jiménez?

   Para comenzar, don Miguel es el fundador de Northgate Market, un inmigrante de Jalisco, México. Antes de que Northgate Market empezara, don Miguel trabajó como zapatero en una pequeña tienda en su querido pueblo. En 1952, tras un trágico incendio que arrasó su zapatería, lo que antes había sido el orgullo de don Miguel quedó reducido a cenizas. Con el apoyo de su esposa, doña Teresa Reynoso, y con el respaldo de su comunidad, don Miguel encontró consuelo y esperanza. Después de 14 años, don Miguel tomó la decisión de emigrar a Estados Unidos en busca del “sueño americano” para darles una vida mejor a su esposa e hijos.

El comienzo del Northgate Market

   En 1980, en Anaheim, California, Don Miguel González Jiménez, su esposa y sus 13 hijos convirtieron una pequeña licorería en una exitosa cadena de supermercados familiar, centrándose en auténtica comida mexicana y en fuertes lazos con la comunidad. Actualmente, sus descendientes dirigen el negocio en constante crecimiento. Desde su primera ubicación en Anaheim, Northgate Market se ha expandido a numerosas tiendas en todo el sur de California, conocidas por sus alimentos mexicanos frescos, panaderías y experiencias culturales.

Entrevista

   Yo entrevisté a Cecilia Luna; ella es una madre que hace sus compras en el Northgate Market para su familia. Las preguntas que le hice a Cecilia fueron: ¿Qué le gusta del mercado Northgate? ¿Cuánto tiempo ha estado haciendo sus compras en Northgate Market? Y la última pregunta fue: ¿Sabe el origen de Northgate Market? Para la primera pregunta, Cecilia dijo que le encanta comprar sus carnes y verduras ahí porque todo está fresco y es de una calidad. Para la segunda pregunta, Cecilia dijo que ha estado haciendo sus compras para su familia de alrededor de 20 años. Y por último, Cecilia dijo que no sabía el origen, pero que ella sabe que es un mercado querido por muchos latinos. Yo le conté sobre el origen del mercado y se le hizo interesante saber sobre la tienda donde ella hace sus compras.

The chain offers a “market” experience with a focus on tradition, community, and culture.

Who is Don Miguel González Jiménez?

To begin, Don Miguel is the founder of Northgate Market, an immigrant originally from Jalisco, Mexico. Before founding Northgate Market, Don Miguel worked as a shoemaker in a small workshop in his beloved hometown. In 1952, after a tragic fire destroyed his shoe repair shop, what had once been Don Miguel’s pride and joy was reduced to ashes. With the support of his wife, Doña Teresa Reynoso, and the backing of his community, Don Miguel found solace and hope. Fourteen years later, Don Miguel decided to immigrate to the United States in pursuit of the “American Dream” to provide a better life for his wife and children.

Today, their descendants run the ever-growing business. Interview

I interviewed Cecilia Luna, a mother who shops at Northgate Market for her family. The questions I asked Cecilia were: What do you like about Northgate Market? How long have you been shopping at Northgate Market? And, Do you know the origin of Northgate Market? For the first question, Cecilia said that she loves buying her meat and vegetables there because everything is fresh and of high quality. For the second question, Cecilia said that she has been shopping there for her family for about 20 years. And finally, Cecilia said that she didn’t know the origin but that she knows it’s a market loved by many Latinos. I told her about the market’s origin, and she found it interesting to learn about the store where she does her shopping.
