Many students don’t realize that there’s a hidden gem on our campus designed to support us through high school and into college. I’m definitely not one of those students—so here’s an article to share what this program is all about!
This hidden gem is a program offered at almost all AUHSD schools through Cal State University, Fullerton. It’s called Educational Talent Search, or ETS for short. I’ve been part of ETS since my freshman year, and it has helped me in so many ways. I truly love this program!
But you might be wondering… what exactly is ETS? To find out, I sat down with the senior class advisor, Fairs Khokhar, and asked him a few questions.
What is ETS?
According to Mr. Khokhar, “Educational Talent Search (ETS) at Cal State Fullerton is a federally funded college-access program that supports students from first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented backgrounds. The program works to close equity and opportunity gaps by providing early exposure to college pathways, academic support, and guidance for both students and their families. ETS is designed to empower students, build confidence, and help them develop the skills needed for long-term academic and personal success.”
I also asked him, how does it help students? He responded with,
“ETS supports students by making the journey to college clearer and more accessible. Through individualized advising with current college students, college and career workshops, campus tours, and targeted academic resources, ETS helps students build informed plans for their future. The program simplifies the college-going process, helping students understand financial aid, admissions, coursework, and career options, so they feel prepared and confident in achieving their goals.”
Lastly I asked him a closer to heart question, How long have you advised for ETS, and what moved you to pursue this role in the first place?
“This is my second academic year serving as an ETS Advisor. I learned about the position through a social media post from a Cal State Fullerton graduate student page when I was starting my master’s program in Fall 2024. At the time, I wasn’t familiar with ETS since I didn’t attend school in the districts the program serves. But after researching the program and reading the job description, I realized how closely ETS aligned with my interests and long-term career goals. That’s what motivated me to apply, and I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to support students ever since.
As a student, I always know I can go to my advisor for anything, whether it’s for a letter of recommendation, to talk about my grades or simply just to talk. I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of such a moving program. Within this program I have been able to attend many field trips that have taken us to different universities and a fun activity afterwards. Recently I attended a field trip to California State University, San Bernardino. We visited the campus and got a wonderful tour around the campus, we were also able to go inside a few buildings. After this we went indoor skydiving, it was amazing. It’s my second time going and I love it every time.
If it wasn’t for this program I wouldn’t have met such amazing people! I always encourage other students to join!
Muchos estudiantes no se dan cuenta de que hay una joya escondida en nuestro campus diseñada para apoyarnos durante la preparatoria y ayudarnos a llegar a la universidad. Yo definitivamente no soy una de esas estudiantes, ¡así que aquí les traigo un artículo para compartir de qué se trata este programa!
Esta joya escondida es un programa ofrecido en casi todas las escuelas de AUHSD a través de la Universidad Estatal de California, Fullerton. Se llama Educational Talent Search, o ETS por sus siglas en inglés. He sido parte de ETS desde mi primer año de high school, y me ha ayudado de tantas maneras. ¡Realmente amo este programa!
Pero quizá te estés preguntando… ¿Qué exactamente es ETS?
Para averiguarlo, hablé con el asesor de la clase senior, Fairs Khokhar, y le hice algunas preguntas.
¿Qué es ETS?
Según el Sr. Khokhar, “Educational Talent Search (ETS) en Cal State Fullerton es un programa de acceso universitario financiado por el gobierno federal que apoya a estudiantes de familias de bajos ingresos, de primera generación universitaria y de comunidades subrepresentadas. El programa trabaja para cerrar brechas de equidad y oportunidad mediante la exposición temprana a caminos universitarios, apoyo académico y orientación tanto para los estudiantes como para sus familias. ETS está diseñado para empoderar a los estudiantes, fortalecer su confianza y ayudarlos a desarrollar las habilidades necesarias para tener éxito académico y personal a largo plazo.”
También le pregunté: ¿cómo ayuda ETS a los estudiantes?
Él respondió: “ETS apoya a los estudiantes haciendo que el camino hacia la universidad sea más claro y accesible. A través de asesorías individuales con estudiantes universitarios actuales, talleres sobre universidades y carreras, recorridos por campus y recursos académicos específicos, ETS ayuda a los estudiantes a crear planes informados para su futuro. El programa simplifica el proceso universitario, ayudando a los estudiantes a entender la ayuda financiera, las admisiones, las clases y las opciones profesionales, para que se sientan preparados y confiados en alcanzar sus metas.”
Finalmente, le hice una pregunta más cercana al corazón: ¿Cuánto tiempo has asesorado para ETS y qué te motivó a buscar este papel en primer lugar?
Él compartió lo siguiente: “Este es mi segundo año académico como Asesor de ETS. Supe del puesto por una publicación en redes sociales en una página para estudiantes de posgrado de Cal State Fullerton cuando estaba empezando mi programa de maestría en el otoño de 2024. En ese momento, no estaba familiarizado con ETS porque no asistí a escuelas en los distritos a los que sirve el programa. Pero después de investigar y leer la descripción del trabajo, me di cuenta de lo mucho que ETS coincidía con mis intereses y mis metas profesionales a largo plazo. Eso fue lo que me motivó a solicitar, y desde entonces he estado agradecido por la oportunidad de apoyar a los estudiantes.”
Como estudiante, siempre sé que puedo hablar con mi asesor para cualquier cosa, ya sea para una carta de recomendación, para hablar sobre mis calificaciones o simplemente para conversar. Estoy realmente agradecida por tener la oportunidad de ser parte de un programa tan inspirador. Dentro de este programa he podido asistir a muchos viajes donde visitamos diferentes universidades y hacemos una actividad divertida después. Recientemente fui a un viaje a la Universidad Estatal de California, San Bernardino. Visitamos el campus, recibimos un recorrido increíble y también pudimos entrar a algunos edificios. Después de eso fuimos a hacer paracaidismo bajo techo, fue increíble. Es mi segunda vez y me encanta cada vez más.
Si no fuera por este programa, ¡no habría conocido a personas tan increíbles! ¡Siempre animo a otros estudiantes a unirse!
