Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a teacher at AHS? Well, then you’re just in luck, because we will take a deep dive into one of our favorite teachers, Mr. Handley.
To start, who is Mr. Handley? Currently, he is the advisor for the newly made club, Association of Ocean Conservation (AOC), and a Living Earth teacher. He shares with us his teaching journey by saying, “I student taught during the Fall 2024 semester. After regular day-to-day subbing for about a year and long-term subbing for almost a full school year, I was eventually hired at Anaheim for the Spring semester of 2025. This year is my first full year at Anaheim.” Being a teacher can be hard at times. To de-stress, Mr. Hadnely enjoys watching movies or reading books. He finds “reading for about 30 minutes right before bed is a good way to de-stress.” He also notes that his favorite thing about teaching is “when I get to see my students finally understand a topic that has been challenging for them. Similarly, when I get to see students grow not only academically, but also socially and individually as people, it is super valuable to me.”
Even though Mr. Handley is new, he has surely made an impact on our campus. As the AOC advisor, he has helped plan events to promote positivity here on our campus. He notes the importance of the club by expressing, “I really enjoy being the advisor for AOC. I had initially wanted to become a marine biologist before eventually changing my major to biology education. I have always enjoyed going to the beach and learning about the different organisms and habitats that exist. It has been a valuable experience for me to get to be the advisor for students who are passionate about conservation. I am really looking forward to the future where the club can create change for our oceans.”
It is truly a gift to have Mr. Handley a part of the AHS team, and we hope to have him for many more years to come. Without teachers, the future generations of the world will be uneducated. “I think the takeover of AI tools like Gemini and ChatGPT is showing the importance of instruction from teachers…It is so important for teachers to act as a guide on how to think critically, and I think certain tools that currently exist fail to do that. Having a teacher who can help students think critically will always be valuable, regardless of the technology tools that exist to help students learn.” (Handley’s final thought) Thank you, Mr. Handley, and all the teachers here at Anaheim High School.

Para empezar, ¿quién es el Sr. Handley? Actualmente, es el asesor del recién creado club Asociación para la Conservación de los Océanos (AOC, por sus siglas en inglés) y maestro de la asignatura *Living Earth* (Biología y Ciencias de la Tierra). Nos comparte su trayectoria docente diciendo: “Realicé mis prácticas de enseñanza durante el semestre de otoño de 2024. Tras trabajar como maestro sustituto regular durante aproximadamente un año, y como sustituto a largo plazo durante casi un año escolar completo, finalmente fui contratado en Anaheim para el semestre de primavera de 2025. Este es mi primer año completo en Anaheim.” Ser profesor puede resultar difícil en ocasiones. Para desestresarse, el Sr. Handley disfruta ver películas o leer libros. Considera que “leer durante unos 30 minutos justo antes de acostarse es una buena forma de liberar el estrés.” También señala que lo que más le gusta de la enseñanza es “cuando veo que mis estudiantes por fin comprenden un tema que les había resultado difícil. Del mismo modo, cuando veo a los estudiantes crecer no solo en el ámbito académico, sino también en el social y personal, resulta sumamente gratificante para mí.”
Aunque el Sr. Handley es nuevo en la institución, sin duda ha dejado su huella en nuestro campus. Como asesor del AOC, ha colaborado en la planificación de eventos destinados a fomentar un ambiente positivo en nuestra escuela. Destaca la importancia diciendo: “Disfruto mucho siendo el asesor del AOC.” Inicialmente quería dedicarme a la biología marina, antes de cambiar finalmente mi especialidad a la educación en biología. Siempre me ha gustado ir a la playa y aprender sobre los diversos organismos y hábitats que existen. Ha sido una experiencia muy valiosa para mí poder asesorar a estudiantes apasionados por la conservación. Tengo muchas esperanzas puestas en el futuro en el que el club pueda generar un cambio positivo para nuestros océanos.”
Es verdaderamente un regalo contar con el Sr. Handley como parte del equipo de AHS, y esperamos tenerlo con nosotros por muchos años más. Sin maestros, las futuras generaciones del mundo carecerían de educación. “Creo que la irrupción de herramientas de IA, como Gemini y ChatGPT, está poniendo de manifiesto la importancia de la instrucción impartida por los maestros… Es fundamental que los maestros actúen como guías para enseñar a pensar de manera crítica; y considero que ciertas herramientas existentes en la actualidad no logran cumplir con ese cometido. Contar con un maestro capaz de ayudar a los estudiantes a desarrollar el pensamiento crítico será siempre un valor incalculable, independientemente de las herramientas tecnológicas que existan para facilitar el aprendizaje.” (Reflexión final del Sr. Handley).
