Letters have arrived!
Hey AHS! Did you hear that the Pen Pal Letters have arrived? They arrived on February 20th. This whole week our DLA students have been working hard on writing back to their Pen Pals, excitedly informing them about all the things happening at AHS, but since we can’t speak for them why don’t we show you what our students along with our Pen Pals at SJHS and Pen Pal coordinators at both schools have to say about the DLA Pen Pal program! This is not the only letter because all this year, DLA students at AHS and Sycamore Junior High School have been writing to each other.

What were your expectations before sending your first letter?
My expectations before I sent my first letter were that it would be awkward and that I would run out of things to say. Thankfully, my pen pal is talkative and usually asks questions for me to answer.
What do you and your pen pal usually write about?
My pen pal and I usually write about how it is in high school and how they felt when they were a freshman. We also talk about each other’s interests. I learned that she likes the artist named Clairo and that she likes the movie “The Notebook.” I would tell her about the books I read and how I am nervous to go to high school, and she would reassure me that everything would be fine.
What is the most interesting thing you’ve learned about them or their life?
The most interesting thing I’ve learned about my pen pal is that she is very talkative and is friends with my brother. From what she wrote in the letters, I could tell that she is very talkative. I learned from my brother that she is one of his classmates and that at times they talk.
As you can see this pen pal is pleased with the interaction and the conversation topics that they have shared with their pen pal here at AHS, and said that it has been helpful to be reassured of their concerns regarding freshmen year!

How is writing letters different from texting or social media?
Writing letters is different from texting or social media because you are able to personally connect with your pen pal and you’re able to have a relationship with them. That is kind of unique. I know for me personally I enjoy writing letters because I feel like, I don’t know, I just feel like I’m able to put my thoughts more on paper than if I worked on text.
What is the most interesting thing you’ve learned about them or their life?
The most interesting thing I’ve learned about my pen pal’s life is that she really likes to draw a lot and I always get like drawings from her.
What has been your favorite moment from the exchange so far?
My favorite moment has been to know more about my buddy and to be able to have an influence on her life and be able to guide her as she actually moves through junior high school.
Do you think programs like this are important for students? Why?
I do think that programs like these are important for students because they allow them to be a mentor to younger students and for the younger students they are able to have someone that’s in their corner and to guide them as they move on into the next part of their life.

What is the main goal of the pen pal program?
The main goal of the pen pal program is to connect Anaheim HS students with Sycamore JHS students, specifically those in the DLA and ELD programs. The idea is that the Sycamore students can have a connection to Anaheim so they feel more comfortable starting high school and have someone to help guide them. The Anaheim students have the privilege of guiding and mentoring the junior high students as they start high school. Hopefully they can make lasting friendships as well.
What is the process of receiving and delivering the letters?
It started out with Mr. Garcia giving the letters to Ms. Bautista when they were ready and vice versa. However, since I have a son attending Sycamore, he started to help us out or I will drop them off when I pick him up.
How have students responded to the experience so far?
Students seem to like writing and receiving letters. I hear them having conversations about the pen pals and they seem to have a genuine interest in getting to know each other. As I read and edit the letters, I notice a lot of advice going out to the junior high students as the Anaheim students are answering their questions about high school. As a teacher it is fun to see them receive the letters and read them. Overall, I like seeing them use their Spanish for an authentic audience outside of the classroom.

¡Hola, AHS! ¿Se enteraron de que ya llegaron las cartas de nuestros amigos por correspondencia?
Llegaron el 20 de febrero. Durante toda esta semana, nuestros estudiantes de DLA han estado trabajando arduamente para responder a sus amigos por correspondencia, contándoles con gran entusiasmo todo lo que está sucediendo en AHS. Pero, dado que no podemos hablar por ellos, ¿por qué no les mostramos lo que nuestros estudiantes junto con sus amigos por correspondencia de la Sycamore Junior High School y los coordinadores del programa en ambas escuelas tienen que decir sobre el programa de amigos por correspondencia del DLA? Esta no es la única carta, han estado escribiéndose todo el año escolar.

¿Cuáles eran tus expectativas antes de enviar tu primera carta?
Mis expectativas antes de enviar mi primera carta eran que resultaría incómodo y que me quedaría sin cosas que decir. Afortunadamente, mi amigo por correspondencia es conversador y suele hacerme preguntas para que yo las responda.
¿Sobre qué suelen escribir tú y tu amigo por correspondencia?
Mi amiga por correspondencia y yo solemos escribirnos sobre cómo es la vida en la escuela secundaria y sobre cómo se sintió ella cuando estaba en su primer año. También conversamos sobre nuestros respectivos intereses. Descubrí que le gusta la artista llamada Clairo y que le encanta la película “The Notebook.” Yo le hablaba de los libros que leía y de lo nerviosa que me sentía ante la idea de empezar la secundaria, y ella me tranquilizaba asegurándome que todo saldría bien.
¿Qué es lo más interesante que has aprendido sobre ellos o sobre su vida?
Lo más interesante que he descubierto sobre mi amigo por correspondencia es que es muy conversador y que es amigo de mi hermano. Por lo que escribió en las cartas, pude darme cuenta de que es muy hablador. Por mi hermano supe que es uno de sus compañeros de clase y que, de vez en cuando, conversan.
Como pueden ver, este estudiante está muy satisfecho con la interacción y con los temas de conversación que ha compartido con sus amigos por correspondencia aquí en AHS. Además, comentó que le ha resultado de gran ayuda recibir tranquilidad respecto a sus inquietudes sobre el primer año de secundaria.

¿En qué se diferencia escribir cartas de enviar mensajes de texto o usar las redes sociales?
Escribir cartas es diferente a enviar mensajes de texto o usar las redes sociales, ya que te permite conectar personalmente con tu amigo por correspondencia y entablar una relación con él. Eso es algo bastante singular. En lo personal, disfruto escribiendo cartas porque, no sé, siento que puedo plasmar mis pensamientos en el papel con mayor profundidad que si lo hiciera a través de mensajes de texto.
¿Qué es lo más interesante que has aprendido sobre ellos o sobre su vida?
Lo más interesante que he aprendido sobre la vida de mi amiga por correspondencia es que le gusta mucho dibujar, y siempre recibo dibujos de ella.
¿Cuál ha sido tu momento favorito del intercambio hasta ahora?
Mi momento favorito ha sido conocer mejor a mi compañera, poder influir en su vida y guiarla mientras transita por la escuela secundaria.
¿Crees que programas como este son importantes para los estudiantes? ¿Por qué?
Realmente creo que programas como este son importantes para los estudiantes, ya que les permiten servir de mentores a alumnos más jóvenes. A su vez, estos últimos tienen la oportunidad de contar con alguien que los respalde y los guíe a medida que avanzan hacia la siguiente etapa de sus vidas.

¿Cuál es el objetivo principal del programa de amigos por correspondencia?
El objetivo principal del programa de amigos por correspondencia es conectar a los estudiantes de Anaheim HS con los de Sycamore JHS, específicamente con aquellos inscritos en los programas DLA y ELD. La idea es que los estudiantes de Sycamore establezcan un vínculo con Anaheim para que se sientan más cómodos al iniciar la escuela secundaria y cuenten con alguien que los guíe. Los estudiantes de Anaheim tienen el privilegio de orientar y servir de mentores a los alumnos de la escuela intermedia en esta etapa de transición hacia la secundaria. Asimismo, se espera que logren forjar amistades duraderas.
¿Cuál es el proceso de recepción y entrega de las cartas?
Todo comenzó con el Sr. García entregando las cartas a la Sra. Bautista cuando estaban listas, y viceversa. Sin embargo, dado que tengo un hijo que asiste a Sycamore, él empezó a ayudar o yo las entrego cuando paso a recogerlo.
¿Cómo han respondido los estudiantes a la experiencia hasta ahora?
Parece que a los estudiantes les gusta escribir y recibir cartas. Los escucho conversar sobre sus amigos por correspondencia y parecen tener un interés genuino en conocerse mutuamente. A medida que leo y edito las cartas, noto que se ofrecen muchos consejos a los estudiantes de secundaria, ya que los alumnos de Anaheim responden a sus preguntas sobre la escuela preparatoria. Como maestro, resulta gratificante verlos recibir las cartas y leerlas. En general, me gusta verlos utilizar su español para dirigirse a una audiencia auténtica fuera del aula.
