Last year, our girls water polo team made history by being the first women’s sports team to win CIF in Anaheim High School history! However, with the majority of them gone, this season has been a challenge. It’s been tough to build the team back up, but these girls are determined to keep that fire lit! Let’s hear about their most recent game, a league game against Rancho Alamitos.
On Thursday, January 15th our girls water polo team faced their third league game of the season against Rancho Alamitos. Sophia Fernandez (#12) claimed that she felt “ready to take them on” when asked about the upcoming match. With a hunger for a win, the team set off and by sunset, they were in the pool.
From the moment the first whistle blew, the girls sprinted off going for the offense. Through rigorous training and team building, they were able to score the first 2 goals of the game, hearing the satisfactory cheers of the crowd only fueled them further. However, this game wasn’t that easy, by the end of the first quarter, the score was 2-2, and by the second, 5-5. Their coach, Denise Osorio told us that “the score was back to 0-0, and they needed to light a fire to win.” During their half time, these girls realized that if they wanted to win this, they needed to get pumped up. One of the players, Sofia Estelles (#4), said “I needed to step up for my team and get some goals in.” Further proving the determination these girls had.
With the fire lit, the whistle of the third quarter changed this team’s entire momentum. Goal after goal, they played a tight match up and down the pool. Putting their hearts into every play, they wouldn’t stop or even slow down until the win was secured. By the final whistle, the game ended with an 11-8 victory.
The girls’ cheers were heard by the entire pool deck, their hard work finally paying off. Bystander Renee Candela stated that she felt “proud and excited to see what they’re going to do in the next game.” After a post game debrief, Annabelle Cheely (#10) was awarded “Player of the Game” for her swift performance, ball awareness, and great playing. Although they’re not last year’s varsity team, they’re making new waves with every game.
El año pasado, nuestro equipo femenino de water polo hizo historia al ser el primer equipo deportivo femenino en ganar el campeonato CIF en la historia de la escuela secundaria de Anaheim. Sin embargo, con la mayoría de las jugadoras del año pasado ya fuera del equipo, esta temporada ha sido un desafío. Ha sido difícil reconstruir el equipo, pero estas chicas están decididas a mantener viva la llama. Hablemos de su partido más reciente, un partido de liga contra Rancho Alamitos.
El jueves 15 de enero, nuestro equipo femenino de water polo se enfrentó a su tercer partido de liga de la temporada contra Rancho Alamitos. Sophia Fernandez (#12) afirmó sentirse “lista para enfrentarlas” cuando se le preguntó sobre el próximo partido. Con muchas ganas de ganar, el equipo se puso en marcha y, al atardecer, ya estaban en la piscina.
Desde el momento en que sonó el primer silbato, las chicas salieron disparadas al ataque. Gracias a un entrenamiento riguroso y al trabajo en equipo, lograron marcar los dos primeros goles del partido, y los aplausos de la multitud solo las motivaron aún más. Sin embargo, el partido no fue fácil. Al final del primer cuarto, el marcador era de 2-2, y al final del segundo, de 5-5. Su entrenadora, Denise Osorio, nos contó que “el marcador estaba de nuevo en 0-0 y necesitaban encender la chispa para ganar.” Durante el descanso, estas chicas se dieron cuenta de que, si querían ganar, necesitaban animarse. Una de las jugadoras, Sofia Estelles (#4), dijo “Necesitaba dar un paso al frente por mi equipo y marcar algunos goles,” lo que demuestra la determinación de estas chicas.
Con la chispa encendida, el silbato del tercer cuarto cambió por completo el rumbo del partido. Gol tras gol, jugaron un partido reñido de un extremo a otro de la piscina. Dándolo todo en cada jugada, no se detuvieron ni bajaron el ritmo hasta que la victoria estaba asegurada. Al sonar el silbato final, el partido terminó con una victoria de 11-8.
Los vítores de las chicas se escucharon en toda la piscina; su arduo trabajo finalmente dio sus frutos. La espectadora Renee Candela declaró sentirse “orgullosa y emocionada de ver lo que harán en el próximo partido.” Tras la sesión informativa posterior al partido, Anabelle Cheely (#10) fue nombrada “Jugadora del Partido” por su excelente actuación, su dominio del balón y su gran juego. Aunque no son el mismo equipo que el del año pasado, están causando sensación con cada choque acuático.
