It’s official, the House of Representatives has finally passed a resolution formalizing the impeachment inquiry. This is the fourth impeachment inquiry in American history (Andrew Jackson, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton were all been investigated.) A whistleblower reportedly heard a call between President Trump and the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky discussing former Vice President Joe Biden’s son’s dealings in Ukraine

This has sparked outrage in the Democratic base. Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House of Representatives, said, “The actions of the Trump presidency revealed dishonorable facts of betrayal of his oath of office and betrayal of our national security and betrayal of the integrity of our elections.”

2020 Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders stated,”But this is what I will say, what I will say is that I believe that the Trump administration is probably the most corrupt administration, maybe in the history of the United States and I think the impeachment process will only further educate the American people to the degree as to how corrupt.” Democratic Senate Minority leader, Chuck Schumer, has said,” But I’m increasingly worried that President Trump may want to shut down the government again because of impeachment, an impeachment inquiry.”

Republican leaders have widely supported the president. Senate majority leader Mitch Mcconnell said, “Well, Nancy Pelosi is conducting a kangaroo court over in the House, denying the president his due process rights that every American is entitled to.” Lindsey Graham, senator of South Carolina, has said, “If you can drive down a president’s poll numbers by having proceedings where you selectively leak information, where the president who’s the subject of all this is pretty much shut out, God help future presidents.”

Joe Biden, who was the target of the phone call, said, “With his words and his actions, President Trump has indicted himself. By obstructing justice, refusing to comply with a congressional inquiry, he’s already convicted himself in full view of the world and the American people.¨

Donald Trump’s impeachment inquiry is unprecedented because it is the first time a president has been investigated for having an inappropriate interaction with a foreign government. It has been reported that President Trump contacted President Zelensky to ask for the Ukranian government to investigate Joe Biden´s son, Hunter Biden, on his businesses in Ukraine. This is illegal for a president cannot ask for foreign entities to assist his or her campaign.

According to the phone call transcript between Trump and Zelensky, the president doesn’t explicitly ask for aid in his campaign, but he does state in the transcript, ¨but the United States has been very very good to Ukraine. I wouldn’t say that it’s reciprocal necessarily because things are happening that are not good, but the United States has been very very good to Ukraine.¨

According to a video from theguardian.com, Trump considers the impeachment inquiry a witch hunt. At this moment, Rudy Guliani, President Trump’s lawyer, is being investigated in his involvement. As of now, the whistleblower has not been revealed.
