“Us” Movie Review

Gabriela Gonzalez, Reporter

The movie “Us” was released on March 22, 2019, and is an R-rated film. The opening scene takes the audience back to 1986 on the Santa Cruz boardwalk.

We watch as a family with a struggling relationship attempts to make the best of their time on the boardwalk. As soon as her parents are not paying close attention, Adelaide, the main character of the movie, walks toward the beach and walks into a house of mirrors, where she lives through a traumatic experience.

Fast forward a few decades, and the audience is taken to the present day, and Adelaide Wilson now has a family of her own. Adelaide revisits the boardwalk, where she had her traumatic experience. The main idea of the movie is that each person in the United States has a doppelgänger, who all live underground, living out the same lives as those who live on the surface.

Jesus Najera, a senior at Anaheim, had this to say about the film: “It’s a horror movie but with a lot of comedy so it isn’t just suspenseful. The plot is somewhat interesting but is not quite developed in my opinion. However, the acting was good as they stayed consistent with their character throughout the movie.”

“It was interesting and mind-twisting, however, I did not like the ending,” said Adriana Gonzalez.  The movie had an interesting balance between jump scares and comedy, which makes the experience for the audience a different one. The plot also keeps the audience questioning the motives of the doppelgängers and why they have chosen to retaliate with violence.
