Happy 3 years to MITAM!

On November 13, 2015, One Direction, an English-Irish pop music band, officially released their fifth and latest album. Upon its release, it debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart with 93,189 copies sold as well as second on the US Billboard 200. The album received complimentary reviews from critics and broke the predicted trend of consecutively declining boy-band album sales. Present members include Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson.

The tracklist includes:

  1. Hey Angel: Being the first song of the album, Harry Styles–a member of the group– claimed that the group had wanted a simple song to set the tone of the whole album. Although fans had expected the song to be a ballad based on the emotional lyrics “Hey Angel. Do you know the reasons why, we look up to the sky?” that was tweeted by Styles months before the release of the album, Hey Angel is very upbeat and anthemic.
  2. Drag Me Down: This song was the first single released from the album. It quickly climbed its way up the charts, making fans eager to hear the rest of the album. Drag Me Down is a song full of energy and euphoria about having the willpower to tackle any obstacle. Some say this is related to former band member, Zayn Malik, who left the band- being as it was their first single without him.
  3. Perfect: One Direction released this as their second single from the album. Co-written by both Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles, the song includes lyrics relating to loving without commitment while on tour, “If you like causing trouble up in hotel rooms/If you like having secret little rendezvous/If you like to do the things that we shouldn’t do/Baby you’re perfect.” Although it is said to be written about the former relationship between Styles and Taylor Swift, Tomlinson claimed that it was up to “fan’s interpretation” but never confirmed whether it was true or false.
  4. Infinity: Being the first ballad of the album, the song conveys strong emotions and gradually builds up as the song continues. This is one of the few songs the band has written about having their hearts broken, with the lyrics stating, “How many nights does it take to count the stars?/That’s the time it would take to fix my heart.” Although being teased with a music video, the band never released it, despite confirmation by Niall Horan that it had been filmed and produced.
  5. End of the Day: Featuring an uplifting beat, End of the Day reflects on the idea of following one’s heart to be happy despite the consequences that may follow. It may be interpreted as a life lesson to do whatever brings the listener happiness. Some fans have claimed that it can be related to the idea of “love is love” as the song says, “All I know at the end of the day/Is you love who you love, there ain’t no other way.”
  6. If I Could Fly: The opening lines, “If I could fly, I’d be coming right back home to you/I think I might give up everything, just ask me to,” set the melancholy tone. The lyrics remain gender neutral while speaking about going back home, so as to relate to every listener. Home, in the song, is not a place but rather a person. The song is slow and packed with raw emotion as the boys sing over a single piano in the background. Styles performed this on his own solo tour, Harry Styles: Live on Tour.
  7. Long Way Down: Once again, this song is a ballad; however, it is very distinct from the others off the album. The concept of the song is about reminiscing a past relationship that did not function, despite having strong feelings for the other person. With the line “We built it up so high and now I’m falling/It’s a long way down,” the boys capture the moment after a breakup and recreate this emotion in the song using a slow and dragged-out melody.
  8. Never Enough: Moving on from the ballads, One Direction adds an upbeat song to the mix. After bringing the crowd with slower songs, the boys include a fast tempo song that will surely bring people to their feet. With the catchy “C’mon”s and the trumpets, this song is sure to mend one’s broken heart from hearing the ballads on the album.
  9. Olivia: Although one may think that the song was written about being in love with a girl named Olivia, the band stated that Olivia is not necessarily a person. As Harry Styles said in an interview, “Is Olivia even a person? Is Olivia an emotion? Is she a place? We don’t know.” Furthermore, Styles claims that he would’ve liked the song to have trumpets in the chorus. However, they were not added, giving him the feeling that the album was not yet finished.
  10. What a Feeling: It can be said that this song has some vibes related to the band, Fleetwood Mac, since the boys are known fans of said band. What a Feeling includes pleasing harmonies and soft background music creating a soothing and calming melody. The song includes the famous line, “But you’ve got the stars, they’re in your eyes/And I’ve got something missing tonight/What a feeling to be a king beside you, somehow/I wish I could be there now.”
  11. Love You Goodbye: One Direction returned back to another heavy-hearted ballad. The song includes, once again, impeccable harmonies and Louis Tomlinson’s incredible high note during the bridge: “One more taste of your lips just to bring me back/To the places we’ve been and the nights we’ve had/Because if this is it then at least we could end it right.”
  12. I Want to Write You a Song: This song has been an anthem for the fans as a hope that One Direction will come back soon from their hiatus. With the single guitar in the background, Horan sings, “So any time I’m gone, you can listen to my voice and sing along.”
  13. History: This song holds a lot of history. The boys performed this song for their last performance before their hiatus. It seems that this song is written between the fans and the band, making them the “greatest team that the world has ever seen.” The iconic line, “We can live forever,” gives the fans hope that One Direction will make a return and their relationship with their fans will always be strong.
  14. Temporary Fix: The song can be seen as a No Control 2.0. The whole song is hyped and upbeat. Although, the song and its lyrics are a little risque. The lyrics allude to a having a fun night out and meeting new people- “Let me touch you where your heart is.”
  15. Walking In The Wind: This song definitely is the perfect mix between a ballad and an uptempo song. Walking In The Wind is known to have any interpretations. Many see it as a dedication to the fans as the band moves into their hiatus whereas others believe it to be a message to Zayn Malik, a former member. “Yesterday I went out/To celebrate the birthday of a friend/But as we raised our glasses up to make a toast/I realized you were missing.”
  16. Wolves: The beat and tune of this song are very catchy, and odds are, it’ll get stuck in your head. The “ooh’s” of the song are truly unbelievable and it’ll have you singing along after the first verse. The song holds a strong flow into the chorus as the beat builds up dramatically. According to the band, the song was fun to make.
  17. A.M.: At last, the final song of the album. The song was a perfect ending to the album, referencing the title of the whole album, Made in the A.M. It is a slower song than some of the rest. The message of the song is staying up with your friends and having conversations that do not make sense since it is, after all, a conversation happening after staying up all night until morning. Alas, that what makes the conversations so great.

Although it has been three years since it came out, the One Direction boys never toured the album like they have every other album in the past. A few months prior to the album release, the boys announced that they were going to take a break in 2016. The band had claimed that they hiatus would only last 18 months, but the fans are still waiting for their return three years later. As of now, the boys are enjoying their time as solo artists. However, the fans want the boys to make a return as long as they are happy to do so. This is the third November where the said band has not released an album.
