Anaheim’s Girls Basketball team has always been recognized for their extraordinary talent on the court. Their hard-work and hours of practice shine both in home and away games. The first round of CIF was no different. This intense game was packed with meaningful moments that highlighted our basketball champions. 

The girls were up against tough competition, University Prep, located in Victorville, CA. During the game, the momentum would swap constantly. At first Anaheim High School seemed like the clear winner with impressive ball interceptions and excellent defense. As time progressed, however, the game began to get competitive. Many of the audience members felt that University Prep was awarded one too many free-throws for completely legal plays. The gym echoed with boos, Anaheim’s passion and pride radiated throughout the gym, but was this the right way to show it? 

Towards the middle of the game, it was evident that our Anaheim girls were frustrated and their spirits were down from the ref’s calls. Even though the odds were stacked against them, they still managed to keep up and combated the free-throw points with stunning three pointers often scored by star players Aleah McGregor, #10 and Giselle Zambrano, #12. Even when the girls were downed, our cheerleaders were there supporting them. Alexandra Ramirez, a cheerleader JV captain, explains how she kept spirits up, “Once we start feeling that confusion and anxiousness, I start jumping around, doing some kicks, chanting.” Ramirez also explains the main role of a cheerleader as, “We always make sure to keep our levels high for the sake of the players and the crowd.”

This emotionally investing game brought not only parents and Anaheim students together, but students from all over the district as well. Karlee Obregon, a varsity senior basketball player, came to watch her former coach, Coach Xavier, lead the Anaheim girls. He worked with Magnolia High School for 7 years forming a strong bond with his girls. Obregon said “I really miss my old coach.” She also described the Girls Basketball program saying, “They work really hard, constantly practicing and constantly in the weight room.” She even highlighted number #10 on the team, “ She’s goated.”

Speaking of #10, towards the end of the third quarter, she cramped up worrying her teammates and those on the stand. She continued playing, but shortly after she started cramping again, taking her out of the game. The team hadn’t lost their spirits quite yet though, enduring through the game. 

The last minute of the game commenced with Anaheim leading the score 38-36. They knew they had to waste any and all seconds of the other team’s time. Sadly, the University Prep girls fought and managed to tie it 38-38 with 40 seconds left. Both teams felt the tension thick in the air fighting relentlessly for the ball. With a slip of the hand, University Prep gained control of the ball and scored with 19 seconds left on the clock. 

After a strategic timeout, Giselle, #12 made a valiant effort to score. She set her feet down, jumped up from the 3 pointer line and let go of the ball…but sadly she did not score. The Anaheim Girls Basketball team would not be moving on to the 2nd round of CIF. However, their efforts won’t be forgotten and their radiating spirits will continue to linger among the stands.

El equipo de chicas de baloncesto de Anaheim siempre ha sido reconocido por su extraordinario talento en la cancha. Su arduo trabajo y horas de práctica brillan tanto en casa como fuera de casa. La primera ronda de CIF no fue la excepción. Este intenso partido estuvo repleto de momentos significativos que destacaron a nuestras campeonas de baloncesto.

Las chicas se enfrentaron a una dura competencia: University Prep, ubicada en Victorville, California. Durante el partido, el ritmo cambió constantemente. Al principio, Anaheim High School parecía la clara ganadora con impresionantes intercepciones y una excelente defensa. Sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo, el partido se volvió más competitivo. Muchos espectadores sintieron que University Prep recibió demasiados tiros libres por jugadas completamente legales. El gimnasio resonó con abucheos, la pasión y el orgullo de Anaheim se irradiaban por todo el estadio, pero ¿era esta la manera correcta de demostrarlo?

Hacia la mitad del partido, era evidente que nuestras chicas de Anaheim estaban frustradas y desanimadas por las decisiones del árbitro. A pesar de las adversidades, lograron mantener el ritmo y combatir los puntos de tiros libres con impresionantes triples, anotados con frecuencia por las estrellas Aleah McGregor, número 10, y Giselle Zambrano, número 12. Incluso cuando las chicas estaban desanimadas, nuestras animadoras estuvieron allí apoyándolas. Alexandra Ramírez, capitana del equipo JV de animadoras, explica cómo mantuvo el ánimo: “En cuanto empezamos a sentir esa confusión y ansiedad, empiezo a saltar, a dar patadas y a corear.” Ramírez también explica el papel principal de una animadora: “Siempre nos aseguramos de mantener el nivel alto por el bien de las jugadoras y del público.”

Este partido, tan emotivo, reunió no solo a padres y estudiantes de Anaheim, sino también a estudiantes de todo el distrito. Karlee Obregon, jugadora de baloncesto de último año, vino a ver a su antiguo entrenador, el entrenador Xavier, dirigir a las chicas de Anaheim. Trabajó con la Preparatoria Magnolia durante 7 años, forjando un fuerte vínculo con sus chicas. Obregón dijo: “Extraño mucho a mi antiguo entrenador.” También describió el programa de baloncesto femenino diciendo: “Trabajan muy duro, practican constantemente y están constantemente en el gimnasio.” Incluso destacó a la número 10 del equipo: “Está muy cabreada.”

Hablando de la número 10, hacia el final del tercer cuarto, sufrió un calambre que preocupó a sus compañeras y a las que estaban en la tribuna. Siguió jugando, pero poco después volvió a sufrir calambres, lo que la sacó del partido. El equipo aún no había perdido el ánimo y aguantó todo el partido.

El último minuto del partido comenzó con Anaheim ganando 38-36. Sabían que tenían que desperdiciar todos los segundos del equipo contrario. Lamentablemente, las chicas de University Prep lucharon y lograron empatar 38-38 a 40 segundos del final. Ambos equipos sentían la tensión en el aire, luchando sin descanso por el balón. Con un desliz, University Prep tomó el control del balón y anotó a 19 segundos del final.

Después de un tiempo muerto estratégico, Giselle, número 12, hizo un valiente esfuerzo por anotar. Se puso de pie, saltó desde la línea de triples y soltó el balón… pero lamentablemente no anotó. El equipo femenino de baloncesto de Anaheim no avanzaría a la segunda ronda de la CIF. Sin embargo, sus esfuerzos no serán olvidados y su entusiasmo radiante seguirá presente en las gradas.
