In our second teacher feature, we got a glimpse of Mrs. Lopez’s day as a History teacher at Anaheim High School. She walked us through the pros and cons of being a teacher. She elaborates by sharing her reasoning behind why she chose this career path and the passion she has developed for it. Today, we will continue this series by learning more alongside another History and English teacher from Anaheim High School.
Firstly, we interviewed Mrs. Gamboa, who is an AP History teacher. We learned that she prepares for her lessons by “reviewing the College Board standards and key concepts, then planning lessons around historical thinking skills like sourcing, argumentation, and using evidence. I choose activities and practice that prepare you for DBQs, SAQs, and multiple choice questions, and I adjust based on how the class is doing and their needs.” We can see just how differently Mrs. Gamboa prepares for lessons, especially because she has to base them on certain criteria from the College Board and prepare students for the AP exam. Like Mrs. Lopez and like many others who chose to become teachers because they wanted to make a difference, she specifically says, “I became a teacher because I want to make a difference in young people’s lives. I wanted to give students the support and opportunities to succeed that my teachers gave me.”
Diving deeper into Mrs. Gamboa’s day in her life as a teacher, we learn that during the school day she spends her time “teaching and working with my students. Outside of school hours, I usually dedicate a full day on weekends and a few hours in the evenings during the week to plan lessons, grade, and prepare materials so I can best support my students.” Lastly, we learn that Mrs. Gamboa’s typical day consists of “preparing materials and reviewing lessons before students arrive. During the school day, I teach classes, support students academically and socially, and adjust instruction based on student needs.” Mrs. Gamboa also enjoys “planning time to collaborate with colleagues, grade, and reflect on student progress. After school, I often spend additional time preparing lessons and providing support so students are set up for success.” Overall, we learn that Mrs. Gamboa is an exceptional teacher who focuses a great amount of time on bettering the education of her students.
From Mrs. Allen, we learn that she is a more hands-on type of teacher her including “different activities so things are fun. I look at the standards and then pick the activities and assignments that we need to complete to show mastery of those skills. Then I try to add some fun into it all.” We can see that Mrs. Allen focuses on creating meaningful but also enjoyable lessons that will make sure students are able to comprehend what they are learning and be able to apply it. Mrs. Allen became a teacher because she “was always interested in helping others, even as a young child.” Along with that, her “mom actually recommended that I become a teacher, because she thought it would be a good job for me.” Lastly, typical days for Mrs. Allen consist of taking a “walk before school. Then I get to hang with my Puente students all day. My Puentistas are rock stars, and I am so happy to work in the Puente program! My students make me so proud.” During her lunch, she enjoys “a salad, in my room while I take care of personal things, or I hang out with the other teachers in the main building.” Once the school day is over, Mrs. Allen usually “makes dinner (I love cooking) and then I help my kids (I have three: Blake, 17, Shaw,n 13, Ashle,y 9) make it to all their sports and after-school activities. I am really excited about this new sports season. Blake is starting track, Shawn’s baseball team is going to start having several games a week, and Ashley just started a new soccer team.” Overall, we can see that not only is Mrs. Allen an amazing teacher at school, but also an amazing mother at home.
All in all, this teacher feature shows that while every teacher has a different style, they all share the same heart. Mrs. Gamboa brings structure, dedication, and high expectations to help students succeed at the AP level, while Mrs. Allen adds creativity, energy, and joy to make learning meaningful and fun. But both teachers go above and beyond and inside and outside the classroom, to be able to support their students. Their passion proves that teaching isn’t just a job; it’s a commitment, and Anaheim High School is truly lucky to be able to have educators like them.

De la Sra. Allen aprendemos que es una maestra más práctica, ya que incluye diferentes actividades para que las cosas sean divertidas. Ella dice, “Revisé los estándares y luego elijo las actividades y tareas que necesitamos completar para demostrar dominio de esas habilidades. Después trato de agregar un poco de diversión a todo.” Podemos ver que la Sra. Allen se enfoca en crear lecciones significativas y divertidas para que los estudiantes entiendan lo que están aprendiendo y puedan aplicarlo. La Sra. Allen se convirtió en maestra porque “siempre estuve interesada en ayudar a los demás, incluso desde niña.” Además, su mamá le recomendó que se convirtiera en maestra porque pensó que sería un buen trabajo para ella.” Un día típico para la Sra. Allen consiste en dar una “caminata antes de la escuela. Luego paso todo el día con mis estudiantes de Puente. ¡Mis Puentistas son increíbles y estoy muy feliz de trabajar en el programa Puente! Mis estudiantes me hacen sentir muy orgullosa”. Durante el almuerzo, disfruta “una ensalada en mi salón mientras hago cosas personales, o convivo con otros maestros en el edificio principal.” Después de la escuela, la Sra. Allen normalmente “preparo la cena (me encanta cocinar) y luego ayudo a mis hijos (tengo tres: Blake de 17, Shawn de 13 y Ashley de 9) a ir a todos sus deportes y actividades después de la escuela.” Ella también está muy emocionada por la nueva temporada de deportes. En general, podemos ver que la Sra. Allen no solo es una excelente maestra en la escuela, sino también una gran madre en casa.
En conclusión, este reportaje muestra que aunque cada maestra tiene un estilo diferente, todas comparten el mismo corazón. La Sra. Gamboa aporta estructura, dedicación y altas expectativas para ayudar a los estudiantes a tener éxito en clases AP, mientras que la Sra. Allen aporta creatividad, energía y alegría para hacer el aprendizaje significativo y divertido. Es claro que ambas maestras hacen más de lo esperado, dentro y fuera del salón de clases, para apoyar a sus estudiantes. Su pasión demuestra que enseñar no es solo un trabajo, sino un compromiso, y Anaheim High School es muy afortunada de tener maestras como ellas.
