We are always told not to judge a book by its cover, but oftentimes we do that. Many people also do it when it comes to album covers. Album covers most often represent how the music on the album will be and oftentimes, many people will have a lot of criticism on it.
An album cover can represent the style for the album, or it could just be a random picture the artist felt like using.
The topic of an album cover can vary depending on people. Many like it to include the name of the album, others don’t. Some like it when artists change the rest of their album cover to fit their new “vibe” going into this transition with their music, but others don’t.
Artists can’t please every person out there. They try their best to satisfy them with their album cover, but it doesn’t always work out.
An album cover that many enjoy is Olivia Rodrigo’s SOUR. It shows her with her tongue out and a newspaper clipping saying “SOUR” which is the album title. A purple background surrounds her face covered with many different stickers. This was her entry into the music industry and a lot of people not only enjoyed her album cover, but the album itself. Her sophomore album GUTS does the same thing, it includes the title in a niche way. It is her biting her thumb with another purple background, and on her fingers there are rings for each letter of GUTS spelling it out and including the name of the album cover.
A lot of people do prefer this “secret” nod to the album cover name rather than just slapping the name onto the album cover, but including it into the art piece, into the photo.
An album cover that was a “hot take” for a long time was the brat album cover by Charlie XCX. Her album cover was simplicity at its finest and people did not like the cover, it was just the title name “brat” in the center of the cover in a simple font, with a “limish” green background. Many people were not fans of the cover originally, but after listening to it and giving time to the album, they decided the album was actually good and the album cover was “changing the status quo.” Eventually, brat was able to turn the tables and now, people use the word brat as being something good, such as, “oh that’s brat.”
SZA’s album, SOS, was rated 26 by Rolling Stones as the 100 of the best album covers. Many people like the album and the album cover. Most like album covers due to what they are trying to symbolize. The album cover is SZA sitting on a diving board with the blue ocean and waves behind and in front of her. Many can relate to her as it represents isolation. It shows her being isolated from society being all alone across the ocean, and the album itself does represent this idea about isolation.
Music is seen as a universal thing, even though you might listen to something different than your friends at school, you can still bond about music and find a common ground with music. Just remember, don’t judge a book (or album) by its cover because who knows, you might fall in love with what’s inside.

En el principio, muchos no fueron fanáticos de la portada, pero después de escuchar el álbum y darle la oportunidad, comenzaron a apreciarlo y a decir que la portada estaba “changing the status quo.” Con el tiempo, brat logró cambiar la percepción y ahora la palabra “brat” se usa para referirse a algo bueno, como decir, “oh, eso es brat.”
