Power Surges Affecting California
November 1, 2019
Due to recent events and random SoCal weather, the electric company Edison has cut power for millions of SoCal homes, in what they say is a way to prevent sparks from fallen electrical posts that start wildfires.
Lately, SoCal Edison has shut the power off for Socal residents. Most recently, on October 17, specifically, Kern County, but more areas are being considered for power shutoffs like LA County(Palmdale), Riverside County(Multiple cities), Orange County(Yorba Linda), and about three other Counts. According to latimes.com, utility executives and political leaders seem to be surprised by the outcome from these power outages, the consequences of these power outages are “traffic lights go dark, and drivers smash their cars. Garage doors won’t open, food rots in refrigerators, phones die. Air conditioners don’t cool. Batteries can’t be recharged for power scooters relied on by disabled people. The aged become especially vulnerable.”
The recent outages have been to protect our communities from wildfires. However, they are hurting our communities by taking away what is now a necessity for our way of life. It will affect the community significantly as said by the LA Times, it will affect our food in our refrigerators, and we won’t have a way of communication if we can’t charge our phones.
This event will also be affecting our students. If there is no electricity in our homes, then that leads to there being no internet, which then may affect our students with their homework and their studies because in this day and age we rely on the internet and computers much for our schools, but it doesn’t end there. These communities being affected are paying for there electrical services, and they are not receiving it for an uncertain amount of time( one day, two days, or three days, maybe even more!?)

Whats the point in paying the electric bill when your not receiving any electricity in your household. I understand if the have to cut the power so the sparks from the electricity doesn’t start a fire, but it shouldn’t be that long to wait.

En mi opinión, creo que es una mala idea, pero una buena idea al mismo tiempo. Deben proporcionar a todos los afectados por este generador de respaldo, de modo que cuando se apaga la energía, tengan energía durante unos 2-3 días.

This is really tragic because everyone relies on electricity. Its shocking how peoples money will be wasted since theyre paying for electricity that they wont get for several days.
