Sony Scores with Spider-man
January 18, 2019
With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse is quickly placing itself among one of the best superhero movies of our age. With an animation style mimicking the drawing style of comic books and a soundtrack featuring artists such as Post Malone and Black Caviar, Into the Spider-verse is a film that will appeal to audiences both young and old.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse is an animated action film that revolves around teenager Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore, who unexpectedly develops superpowers after a spider bite, much like the Peter Parker we all know and love. The film then takes the viewer on a journey filled with multiple Spider-people, including Spider-Woman Gwen Stacy, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, and Spider-Pig, voiced by John Mulaney.
Into the Spider-verse was a chance at redemption by Sony from its previous Spider-Man movies, which left fans disappointed and feeling as if the franchise were being taken advantage of without any proper care. However, Miles Morales’ story quickly changed Sony’s Spider-Man reputation. With a fulfilling backstory and animation that can appeal to both casual movie fans and hardcore comic book fans alike, Into the Spider-verse is a family-friendly film that can keep the kids entertained while also engaging parents. “It’s revolutionary,” says Anaheim High student Alexis Lopez, “It has a great comic book flow.”
Sony does a good job of making sure to give the familiar Peter Parker a hero’s farewell as the mask is taken on by the younger Miles Morales, an Afro-Latino teen from New York City. Fans are sure to love the new Spider-Man, as the momentum of the film gives viewers the chance to get to know him personally and learn who he is and what he stands for. As he journeys on with his fellow Spider-people, his character development is refreshingly realistic, something unexpected yet very welcome from superhero movies.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse is a must-see film for superhero fans everywhere, and will leave viewers satisfied and excited for Sony’s next Spider-Man project.
