Have you ever wondered what it’s like to study in a foreign land? It must seem scary to leave behind all the customs and social norms you once knew for something else entirely. Between language barriers and cultural differences, our new international exchange students have been doing a great job settling into their new American homes. This “Stamped & Settled” segment dives deeper into their experience in California, and of course, at Anaheim High School! Today let’s hear what our German exchange students, Belle Celik and Heidi Berger, have to say about their experience!
When we interviewed our junior exchange student, Belle, she shared that she is from Germany and she plans to stay here for “three months, from August until November 2nd.” She states that her experience here has been great so far! Belle talks about how she “likes the people over here, the whole area, just Anaheim, California.” Specifically, she enjoys the weather and claims that “the people are very friendly, the school is very fun, especially the electives.” Belle expresses that she will miss various things from her experience in America. She says that what she’ll miss most is “friends, the people I met here, the whole place.” Belle highlights how she will miss the electives quite a lot because “we don’t have electives back there,” but she’s made plenty of friends and seems to be enjoying herself so far!
Heidi is another junior exchange student who also happens to be from Germany, specifically Munich. Heidi will be staying “two and a half months, until the 21st of December.” She shares that even though she hasn’t been here long she mentioned “I like it here because everything’s really big.” She especially likes Target because she “could get the Taylor Swift album!” Her favorite part about her home in California is that there is a “pool in our backyard, so that’s also cool.” Lastly, she expresses that “experiencing another culture is very cool because the people are so different from the German people.” She talked about how amazing it’s been to see these differences and how welcoming American people have been to her.
Through these conversations, we get a glimpse into the cultural differences between Germany and the United States. Despite these differences, our German friends made sure to let us know that what matters most to them is the people, the connections built in this short period of time. This reminds us that human relationships have the power to bridge borders and bring people together across the world. The hospitality they’ve experienced here in Anaheim speaks to the importance of friendship in fostering meaningful cultural exchanges. Based on their stories, it’s clear they are enjoying their time, and we hope their stay continues to be memorable!
¿Alguna vez te has preguntado cómo es estudiar en un país extranjero? Debe ser aterrador dejar atrás todas las costumbres y normas sociales que conocías por algo completamente diferente. Entre las barreras del idioma y las diferencias culturales, nuestros nuevos estudiantes de intercambio internacional se han adaptado maravillosamente a sus nuevos hogares estadounidenses. Este segmento de “Estampados y establecidos” profundiza en su experiencia en California y, por supuesto, ¡en la Preparatoria Anaheim! ¡Hoy, escuchemos lo que nuestras estudiantes alemanas de intercambio, Belle Celik y Heidi Berger, tienen que decir sobre su experiencia!
Cuando entrevistamos a Belle, nos contó que es estudiante de intercambio de Alemania y que planea quedarse aquí “tres meses, de agosto al 2 de noviembre.” ¡Afirma que su experiencia ha sido genial hasta ahora! Belle comenta que le gusta “la gente de aquí, de toda la zona, Anaheim, California.” En concreto, disfruta “del clima y afirma que la gente es muy amable, la escuela es muy divertida, especialmente las asignaturas optativas.” Belle comenta que extrañará varias cosas de su experiencia en Estados Unidos. Dice que lo que más extrañará son sus “amigos, la gente que conocí aquí, todo el lugar.” Belle destaca que extrañará mucho “las asignaturas optativas porque no las tenemos allí.” ¡Pero ha hecho muchos amigos y parece que hasta ahora lo está pasando bien!
Heidi es otra estudiante de intercambio que también es de Alemania, específicamente de Múnich. Se quedará “dos meses y medio, hasta el 21 de diciembre.” Comparte que, aunque no lleva mucho tiempo aquí, “le gusta mucho porque todo es enorme.” Le gusta especialmente Target porque “¡podría comprar el álbum de Taylor Swift!” Lo que más le gusta de su casa en California es que hay una “piscina en el patio trasero, lo cual también es genial.” Por último, expresa que “experimentar otra cultura es genial porque la gente es muy diferente a la alemana.” Habló de lo increíble que ha sido ver estas diferencias y de lo acogedores que han sido los estadounidenses con ella.
A través de estas conversaciones, vemos las diferencias culturales entre Alemania y los Estados Unidos. A pesar de estas diferencias, nuestros amigos alemanes se aseguraron de hacernos saber que lo más importante para ellos es la gente, las conexiones cultivadas en este corto período de tiempo. Esto nos recuerda que las relaciones humanas tienen el poder de superar fronteras y unir a personas de todo el mundo. La hospitalidad que han experimentado aquí en Anaheim demuestra la importancia de la amistad para reforzar intercambios culturales significativos. A juzgar por sus historias, es evidente que están disfrutando de su tiempo, ¡y esperamos que su estancia siga siendo memorable!
