The English Language Development (ELD) program is an educational program in California dedicated to providing support in a productive way to students whose first language is not English. The goal is not only to learn English for communication but also to master the language to achieve overall success.

In California, ELD is part of the state law and educational standards. Schools are required to offer linguistic support to students who need it. This means that every student who comes with another home language receives special attention to improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English.

This program is divided into the following levels according to students’ language proficiency: 

• Beginning: The student is starting to communicate in English. Here, teachers use images, gestures, and simple phrases to teach basic vocabulary.
• Intermediate: The student can now communicate better and begins to write and read longer texts.
• Advanced: The student is preparing to use English at the same level as a native speaker in regular classes.

Teachers in this program use various strategies in their classes, such as:

• Group conversation activities
• Guided readings
• Vocabulary games
• Writing paragraphs and short essays
• Debates or oral presentations

The classroom environment is usually very inclusive, visual, and interactive, which helps students feel more comfortable and confident.

Being an ELD student can bring many different emotions. At first, many feel nervous or insecure because they don’t understand everything happening around them. Hearing a different language all day can be overwhelming. Some feel shy to speak, afraid of making mistakes or that their classmates might laugh at their pronunciation. As they progress in the program, many students gain confidence and feel proud of their improvement. They discover that speaking more than one language is not a disadvantage it’s an incredible advantage.

At Anaheim High School, we have an excellent team in charge of our English Learner students. According to students, ELD is like a family, and Mrs. Lang, who is the director of the program and teacher of Level 1, is considered by many as the “mom” of this big family. Among our ELD levels, we also have Mrs. Perez, who teaches Level 2 and prepares our students to keep working hard and Mrs. Le-Todd, who teaches Level 3. She is also responsible for carefully analyzing whether students are ready to move on to what we call regular English classes.

We have also had classes full of ELD students, and during some semesters, teachers from other subjects have shown their support by teaching these classes. For example, Mrs. Rodríguez (Spanish teacher), Mrs. Vásquez-Bruno (Math teacher), and Mrs. Montoya (Spanish teacher) for Level 1, and Mr. Preciado (Spanish teacher) for Level 2.

In my overall opinion as an English learner, I know perfectly well that being part of the ELD program does not mean being “less” than others; it means that you are on a path of growth, learning something that will open opportunities for you throughout your life. Learning a new language not only changes the way you communicate but also the way you see the world. Each word learned is a door to a new experience. Each conversation is an opportunity to connect with someone different. And every day in ELD is one more step toward a future where English and your native language coexist in harmony, reflecting who you are, a bilingual, resilient person with a world of possibilities ahead.

El Desarrollo del idioma Inglés (ELD) por sus siglas en inglés es un programa educativo de California. Está dedicado a brindar apoyo de una manera productiva a los estudiantes cuyo primer idioma no es el inglés. La meta se basa no solo en aprender por la comunicación sino en obtener el dominio del idioma para obtener éxito general. 

En California, ELD forma parte de la ley estatal y de las normas educativas. Las escuelas están obligadas a ofrecer apoyo lingüístico a los estudiantes que lo necesiten. Esto quiere decir que cada estudiante que llega con otro idioma recibe atención especial para mejorar sus habilidades de escuchar, hablar, leer y escribir en inglés.

Este programa está dividido en niveles según el dominio de los estudiantes:

• Principiante: El estudiante está empezando a comunicarse en inglés. Aquí se usan imágenes, gestos, y frases simples para enseñar vocabulario básico.
• Intermedio: El alumno ya puede comunicarse mejor y empieza a escribir y leer textos más largos.
• Avanzado: El estudiante se está preparando para usar inglés al mismo nivel que un hablante nativo en clases regulares.

Los maestros que son encargados de este programa utilizan estrategias en sus clases como:

• Actividades de conversación en grupo.
• Lecturas guiadas.
• Juegos de vocabulario.
• Escritura de párrafos y ensayos cortos.
• Debates o presentaciones orales.

El ambiente suele ser muy inclusivo, visual y participativo, lo que ayuda a que los estudiantes se sientan más cómodos y seguros.

Ser un estudiante de ELD puede traer muchas emociones diferentes. Al principio, muchos se sienten nerviosos o inseguros porque no entienden todo lo que pasa a su alrededor. Escuchar un idioma diferente todo el día puede ser abrumador. Algunos se sienten tímidos para hablar, por miedo a equivocarse o a que sus compañeros se rían de su pronunciación. A medida que avanzan en el programa, muchos estudiantes ganan confianza y se sienten orgullosos de su progreso. Descubren que hablar más de un idioma no es una desventaja, sino una ventaja increíble.

En la escuela preparatoria de Anaheim contamos con un excelente equipo encargado de nuestros estudiantes aprendices de inglés. A palabra de estudiantes, ELD es una familia y la señora Lang que es la directora del programa y maestra del nivel 1 es considerada por muchos como la mamá de esta gran familia. Entre nuestros niveles de ELD encontramos a la Señora Perez que es la maestra de la clase de nivel 2 que prepara a nuestros estudiantes a seguir esforzándose. La señora Le-Todd se encarga del nivel 3, ella también es encargada de analizar arduamente si los estudiantes están preparados para subir a lo que llamamos clases regulares de inglés.  

También hemos tenido clases llenas de estos estudiantes por lo cual en semestres hemos visto que algunos maestros de otras materias muestran su apoyo dando estas clases como lo fue la señora Rodríguez (Maestra de Español), La Señora Vasquez-Bruno(Maestra de Matemáticas), y La señora Montoya (Maestra de Español) para el  nivel 1 y el señor Preciado (Maestro de Español) para el nivel 2. 

En mi opinión general como un estudiante aprendiz de inglés conozco a la perfección que ser parte del programa ELD no significa ser “menos” que los demás; significa que estás en un camino de crecimiento, aprendiendo algo que te abrirá oportunidades para toda la vida. Aprender un idioma nuevo no solo cambia tu forma de comunicarte, sino también tu forma de ver el mundo. Cada palabra aprendida es una puerta a una nueva experiencia. Cada conversación es una oportunidad para conectar con alguien diferente. Y cada día dentro del ELD es un paso más hacia un futuro donde el inglés y tu idioma nativo conviven en armonía, reflejando quién eres, una persona bilingüe, resiliente y con un mundo de posibilidades por delante.
