En sus propias palabras nos dice, “It affects the lesson plan because when I’m teaching it goes off, so I have to make sure that the door is locked, and that the kids are okay. For the kids I think it’s come to the point where they don’t take it seriously anymore, so if something were to happen that was serious, we wouldn’t be prepared or ready.”
En sus propias palabras nos dice, “When I think about the false fire alarms, it just makes me desensitized to the alarm, so every time I hear it I don’t even respond to it anymore. I just assume, oh, it’s fake, it’ll just turn off, in like 5 seconds, and we’re good,” even when I’m not at work. For example, when I’m in my apartment and the alarm goes off I do the same thing. I don’t react anymore because I’ve been so desensitized from these alarms that I just assume they’re all fake all the time.”
Since the beginning of this school year, Anaheim High School continues to have a very serious problem with false lockdown alarms that occur several times a day. This problem has concerned not only Anaheim students but also their parents, who are concerned for their children’s safety.
Mr. Pineda, a math teacher at Anaheim High School, tells us about the effects false lockdown alarms have on him. He shares that most of the time they may be false, but he still always recognizes them as real. In his own words, he says, “It affects the lesson plan because when I’m teaching it goes off, so I have to make sure the door is locked and that the kids are okay. For the kids, I think it’s coming to the point where they don’t take it seriously anymore, so if something were to happen that was serious, we wouldn’t be prepared or ready.”
Now that Mr. Pineda has told us about false fire alarms and how they disrupt his classroom, we’ll hear from another Anaheim High School teacher who has also been affected by false alarms.
Mr. García, a science teacher at Anaheim High School, shares how false alarms have affected him. In his own words, he says, “When I think about false fire alarms, it just desensitizes me to the alarm, so every time I hear it, I don’t even respond to it anymore. I just assume, ‘Oh, it’s fake, it’ll just turn off in like 5 seconds and we’re good,’ even when I’m not at work. For example, when I’m in my apartment and the alarm goes off, I do the same thing. I don’t react anymore because I’ve been so desensitized to these alarms that I just assume they’re fake all the time.”
Coach Vince says, “I take it as seriously as I can. I don’t think about it, I don’t question it because you never know when it might be real or not… when it turns out to be false, well, what can we work on? What did we overlook?” And we just keep going.” These false alarms can be extremely alarming to us, especially to new students, who may not know the alarms are false most of the time. But that doesn’t discourage us from taking them as real as they can be, as Vince says.
Luckily, we have many staff members at our school who care about our safety and don’t see the alarms as false. Our dedicated custodian, Juan, says, “The impact the alarms have on me is my concern for the safety of the children at school during their classes.” Although the alarms may be false, we know what to do in these situations thanks to the drills we participate in each school year. That said, we are prepared for any situation, real or not.
From the feedback we received, we can see that the false alarms have made it harder on our teachers, custodians, students, and the overall community here at AHS. Even though we are desensitized to the alarms, we still take them seriously as if they were real.
Luckily we have many workers here at our school that care for our safety and don’t see the alarms as false alarms.
