Eran las 8:46 a.m el Martes 11 de septiembre del 2001 en Nueva York, donde ocurrieron los ataques más terroríficos, traumáticos y sangrientos en la historia de los Estados Unidos. Las Torres Gemelas, con 110 pisos cada una, fueron impactadas por dos aviones distintos. Este ataque fue causado por un grupo terrorista llamado Al-Qaeda, en el cual unos secuestradores abordaron el vuelo AA 11 que despegó desde Boston a las 7:59 a.m. El primer edificio, la Torre Norte, fue impactado por ese vuelo a las 8:46 a.m., y la Torre Sur fue golpeada por el vuelo AA 175 a las 9:03 a.m.
Lamentablemente, ese día perdieron la vida 343 bomberos y un total de 2,977 personas, incluyendo a 8 niños pequeños de entre 2 y 11 años de edad. Fue un momento de caos y horror: gente gritando, llorando, pidiendo ayuda; bomberos haciendo todo lo posible por rescatar a quienes estaban atrapados. Muchas personas resultaron heridas sin saber qué hacer. En medio del shock y la confusión, algunos trabajadores lograron bajar por las escaleras desde el piso 81 y salir con vida, mientras que otros quedaron atrapados en el piso 92 de la Torre 1.
El presidente George W. Bush recibió la impactante noticia del segundo avión estrellándose mientras se encontraba en una escuela primaria en Florida. A las 9:59 a.m., la Torre Sur colapsó, y a las 10:28 a.m., la Torre Norte también colapsó. Desafortunadamente, en el colapso de la Torre 1, murieron 1,700 personas, incluyendo a Steven Weinberg, quien se encontraba en el piso 78 y no logró salir a tiempo.
Ese mismo día, el vuelo 93 fue secuestrado, y a las 9:37 a.m., el vuelo 77 se estrelló contra el Pentágono. Más tarde, los pasajeros del vuelo 93 se enteraron de lo que estaba pasando y, con mucha valentía, evitaron que el avión llegará a Washington D.C., haciendo que se estrellara en un campo en Pensilvania. Lamentablemente, todos a bordo murieron.
Sabemos que estos ataques cambiaron profundamente a la sociedad estadounidense, al punto que provocaron la guerra en Afganistán y más adelante en Irak. Cada año, el 11 de septiembre se recuerda con ceremonias, momentos de silencio y la lectura de los nombres de las víctimas. Hoy en día, el Memorial y Museo del 11 de septiembre se encuentra en el lugar del World Trade Center en Nueva York.
Para muchos, este día simboliza una gran pérdida, pero también representa actos de valentía, especialmente por parte de los bomberos, policías y personas que ayudaron a salvar vidas. El 11 de septiembre fue un día trágico que transformó al mundo y nos recuerda la importancia de la unidad y de mantener viva la memoria de quienes perdieron la vida en este devastador día.
Además de eso, tuve la oportunidad de entrevistar a mi profesora de Inglés, la señorita Karels, y la primera pregunta que le hice fue: “Cómo se enteró de las noticias del 9/11 y cuál fue su reacción?”. Ella respondió: “Estaba conduciendo a casa después de llevar a mi tío a la estación de tren y lo escuche en la radio me sorprendí. La segunda pregunta fue: “Cambio la sociedad? ¿Cómo cambio?”. Ella respondió: “Si. Algunas personas se volvieron patriotas y exhibieron banderas estadounidenses, algunos de mis amigas se unieron al ejército y, desafortunadamente, algunas personas estereotiparon a las personas del Medio Oriente o a los Musulmanes”. La tercera pregunta fue: “Se tomaron más precauciones en los aeropuertos de Estados Unidos?” Ella respondió: “Si. Detuvieron todos los vuelos en Estados Unidos durante 2 días. Nuevas reglas, revisaron los bolsos, había que quitarse los zapatos y revisaron a la gente”.
It was 8:46 a.m on Tuesday September 11, 2001 in New York, where the most horrific, traumatizing, & bloodiest attacks occurred in the United States of America. In which the Twin Towers of 110 floors were hit by two different types of planes. This attack occurred because of a terrorist attack by the terrorist group named Al-Qaeda, in which hijackers from AA Flight 11 took off from Boston at 7:59a.m. The first building, the North Tower, was hit by AA Flight 11 at 8:46a.m and the South Tower by AA Flight 175 at 9:03a.m.
Unfortunately, 343 firefighters & 2,977 people lost their lives that evening, including 8 young children from ages 2-11 years old. This led to chaos and horror, people screaming & crying for help, firefighters trying their best to rescue everyone.
A lot of people were injured not knowing what to do. In a moment of shock & confusion workers started coming out the staircase 81st floor safe and sound. While others were trapped on the 92nd floor of tower 1, President George W. Bush received the shocking news of a 2nd plane hitting the second tower, while he was in an Elementary School in Florida.
At 9:59a.m the South tower collapsed and at 10:28a.m. the 2nd tower crumbled & collapsed as well. 1,700 people lost their lives when Tower 1 collapsed, including Steven Weinberg who was on the 78th floor that couldn’t make it out on time. On this same day, Flight 93 was attacked by hijackers and at 9:37a.m Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon and later AA Flight 93 received the news of what was going on so passengers and crew members prevented the plane from reaching Washington D.C and ended up crashing in Pennsylvania killing everyone on board.
So far, we all know that the attacks deeply changed U.S society, that it even led to war in Afghanistan & later Iraq. 9/11 is remembered each year with ceremonies, moments of silence, & the reading of victim’s names. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum now stands at the World Trade Center site in New York City. For many, we all know that it symbolizes both great loss an d acts of courage, especially for the firefighters, police officers, & people that helped others make it out of the buildings safe and sound. Also 9/11 was a tragic day that transformed the world, reminding us the importance of unity and remembering those who were lost on this devastating day.
Besides that I got the chance to interview my English teacher Miss Karels, and the first question I asked was, “How did you find out about the 9/11 news & what was your reaction”?. She responded, “I was driving home from taking my uncle to the train station and I heard it on the radio & I was shocked. The second question was, “Did society change? How did it change? She responded, “Yes. Some people became patriotic & displayed American flags, some of my friends joined the military & unfortunately some people stereotyped people from the Middle East or Muslum people.” The third question was “Were there more precautions taken in the United States at the airports? She responded “Yes. They stopped all flights in America for 2 days. New rules, bag searched, you had to take off your shoes, & people were searched”.
