El presidente Donald Trump dijo que quería deportar a muchos criminales incluyendo a todos los inmigrantes, y esto ha causado miedo entre los mexicanos. En algunas partes de Los Ángeles, las redadas de inmigración han provocado protestas porque van directo a los lugares de trabajo. El 1 de junio, casi la mitad de los mexicanos detenidos no tenían antecedentes penales. Además, para esa fecha, unos 51,000 inmigrantes estaban en centros de detención de “ICE”.
En Los Ángeles, los arrestos causaron disturbios y 118 personas terminaron detenidas. ICE dice que están atrapando “lo peor de lo peor”, como personas con delitos de drogas, violencia doméstica o tráfico de inmigrantes. Pero no se sabe exactamente cuántos detenidos tienen antecedentes. Incluso, algunos turistas han sido arrestados por error, como Kilmar Abrego García, un salvadoreño que vivía en Maryland y fue deportado, aunque los jueces dijeron que su expulsión fue incorrecta y que debería poder regresar.
En Estados Unidos, las deportaciones se rigen por la Ley de Inmigración y Nacionalidad, que determina quién puede quedarse y quién no. El Departamento de Seguridad Nacional se encarga de aplicar estas leyes, y ICE realiza las deportaciones. Esto no es algo nuevo: ya en el siglo XIX existían leyes que expulsaban a ciertos inmigrantes. Por ejemplo, en 1882, la Ley de Exclusión China prohibió que trabajaran en el país y permitió su deportación si entraban ilegalmente. Después del 11 de septiembre de 2001, las leyes migratorias se hicieron más estrictas y se creó el DHS y ICE para controlar mejor la inmigración.
Estas deportaciones en Estados Unidos afectan a muchas familias que vienen a Estados Unidos a buscar un futuro mejor para sus familias. Muchas personas vienen de Latinoamérica a este país a trabajar, estudiar y sobre todo a darles un futuro mejor a sus hijos. Sin embargo, cuando no tienen documentos legales o no tienen algún permiso para poder estar en este país corren el riesgo de ser deportados. Para algunas personas es muy triste todo lo que está pasando, ya que se ve algunos casos en donde los niños se quedan solos y a sus padres los mandan para su país. Todo esto es injusto para las personas inmigrantes porque ellos no vienen a hacerle daño. Desde que el presidente Donald Trump asume el cargo, ha ampliado el alcance de su misión, apuntando no solo a los criminales, sino también a los trabajadores migrantes, ciertos activistas estudiantiles e incluso a turistas con problemas de visa. Algunas personas inmigrantes trabajan en trabajos duros como en el campo, en construcción o limpiando casas y gracias a ellos el país también funciona mejor. Tal vez el gobierno debería darles una oportunidad a esas personas, ya que han demostrado que quieren estar aquí y salir adelante. Algunas personas también dicen algunos comentarios malos sobre los inmigrantes, pero ellos no saben lo difícil que es ver dejado su país, su familia y su vida que tenían allá.
Para esté artículo tuvimos la oportunidad de hacerle unas preguntas a un amigo que vino de México(Oaxaca). Nosotros le preguntamos qué opinaba sobre lo que está pasando con todos los inmigrantes detenidos? y él respondió, “Que esta mal, ya que todo esto es discriminación hacia los latinoamericanos que vienen a trabajar y darles un futuro mejor para sus hijos”. La segunda pregunta fue qué harías si supieras que tu o tu familia están apunto de ser deportados? Y él respondió: “ Sinceramente si eso pasara yo regresaría con mi familia a México, antes de que nos deportaran”. También, le preguntamos cuál era la mejor situación para resolver este conflicto, y el dijo que : ¨E escuchado que los latinos habían dado una idea, la cual es no trabajar y el exceso de compras en las tiendas, eso les afectará al estado porque somos los que más trabajamos y consumimos¨.

Deportations aren’t new—back in the 19th century, there were already laws allowing the government to expel certain immigrants. For example, in 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act banned Chinese workers from entering and allowed deportation if they came illegally. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, immigration laws became stricter, and the DHS and ICE were created to better manage immigration.
These deportations in the United States are affecting a lot of families that come to the United States to find a better future for their families. A lot of people come from Latin America to this country to work, study, and above all give their children a better future. No embargo when they have papers or they didn’t have any permission to stay in this country they ran the risk of being deported. But for some people it’s so sad with everything that is happening, now that you see cases in which the kids stay by themselves and with their parents they send them to their country. All this is unfair for the immigrants, because they don’t come here to do any harm. Since the president of the United States took office, has expanded the scope of their mission, pointing not only at the criminals, but also to the workers migrants, certain student activists and even tourists with visa problems. Some people also say some bad comments about the immigrants, but they don’t know the hard work it takes to leave their country, their family, & their lives they lived over there.
For this article, we had the opportunity to ask a friend who came from Mexico (Oaxaca) a few questions. We asked him what he thought about what is happening with all the immigrants being detained by “ICE”, and he responded, “It’s wrong, because all of this is discrimination against Latin Americans who come to work and give their children a better future.” The second question was what he would do if he knew that he or his family were about to be deported, and he responded, “If this were to happen my family & I would go back to Mexico before they deport us”. For the third question we asked, “What would be the best way to resolve this conflict? He said: “I’ve heard that Latinos had an idea, which is to stop working and to overbuy at stores. That will affect the state because we are the ones who work the most and consume the most.”
