The 2025-2026 school year couldn’t have come any sooner for the students at Anaheim High School. Fortunately, our boys waterpolo team was ready for the new semester. They had been practicing during the off season, all summer long, to strengthen their skills. Noah V. (#6), showcasing the resolve this team has to perform at their best, stated that the team “had workouts in the morning from 7am for conditioning then came back later in the day from 5 to 7 pm.”
On August 19, Anaheim was set to face off against Garden Grove High School. Luckily, the weather was on their side and the sun was bright that day, ready for them to jump in the water. Although it was the first of the season Noah V. (#6) stated that “The first game jitters weren’t really there, all it was about was setting a baseline for the season and improving from there.” Neither the arrival of the opposing team nor the audience seemed to phase them. Before anyone knew it, the game had commenced.
At first, the game might not have looked favorable, but Garden Grove underestimated the tenacity of this team. Unfortunately, Micha F. (#19) lost the sprint, but that didn’t discourage our team. The boys quickly got on the offense and took control of the game. Annabelle Cheely, who watched the game, quoted ¨There were moments where it felt nerve racking, but then the boys knew exactly what to do in those tricky situations, so I felt less nervous about the game.¨
During the game it was visible that the boys had been practicing for this big moment all summer. They knew exactly what to do when in a sticky situation. Chris V. (#7) quoted ¨I felt that our team chemistry had grown throughout the summer and that we had developed from spending a long time working at it, so I’m glad to see our first showing and how well we did.¨ Our boys water polo team performed astonishingly, even when each quarter started to feel more draining. Towards the second quarter, the boys started getting a little tired but that didn’t hinder their abilities at all. To quote Micah F. (#19): ¨For me it didn’t really get tiring, maybe a little bit towards the second quarter but we were up by enough so that they could take the starters out and give us a rest.¨ With all the hard work they put into practice, the boys didn’t feel much exhaustion when performing, which as their coach would agree, is the ultimate goal for longer games.
By the end of the thrilling game, the coaches were very proud of their team and how well they performed. Our AHS boys water polo team is a big family that shares compassion, communication, and care when playing in a game. Chris V. (#7) quotes, ¨ I felt really proud of my teammates, every single one of them. I like to see the success from all the new people who came up and all the underclassmen who really stepped it up. I love to see the consistency from our seniors, I was just really proud of my whole team.¨ With a phenomenal score of 17-13, the team left a transparent message to everyone, they are determined to make this season a great one.
El año escolar 2025-2026 llegó con la mayor rapidez para los estudiantes de la Preparatoria Anaheim. Afortunadamente, nuestro equipo masculino de waterpolo estaba listo para el nuevo semestre. Habían estado practicando durante todo el verano, durante la pretemporada, para fortalecer sus habilidades. El 19 de agosto, Anaheim se enfrentaría a la Preparatoria Garden Grove. Noah V. (#6), demostrando la determinación de este equipo para rendir al máximo, afirma que el equipo “entrenaba por la mañana desde las 7 de la mañana para acondicionamiento físico y luego regresaba más tarde, de 5 a 7.”
Por suerte, el clima les acompañó y el sol brilló ese día, listo para que se lanzaran al agua. Aunque era el primero de la temporada, Noah V. (#6) declaró: “No sentían nervios por el primer partido; solo se trataba de sentar las bases para la temporada y mejorar a partir de ahí.” Ni la llegada del equipo contrario ni el público parecieron inmutarse. En un abrir y cerrar de ojos, el partido había comenzado. Al principio, el partido podría no parecer favorable, pero Garden Grove subestimó la tenacidad de este equipo. Desafortunadamente, Micah F. (#19) perdió el sprint, pero eso no desanimó a nuestro equipo. Los chicos rápidamente se pusieron al ataque y tomaron el control del partido. Annabelle Cheely, quien vio el partido, comentó: “Hubo momentos de nerviosismo, pero luego los chicos supieron exactamente qué hacer en esas situaciones complicadas, así que me sentí menos nerviosa por el partido.”
Durante el partido, se notó que los chicos habían estado practicando para este gran momento todo el verano. Sabían exactamente qué hacer en una situación complicada. Chris V. (#7) comentó: “Sentí que la química de nuestro equipo había crecido a lo largo del verano y que habíamos mejorado gracias al largo tiempo de trabajo, así que me alegra ver nuestra primera actuación y lo bien que hicimos.” Nuestro equipo masculino de waterpolo tuvo un rendimiento asombroso, incluso cuando cada cuarto empezó a resultar más agotador. Hacia el segundo cuarto, los chicos empezaron a cansarse un poco, pero eso no afectó en absoluto sus habilidades. Para citar a Micah F. (#19): “Para mí, no fue realmente agotador, quizá un poco hacia el segundo cuarto, pero teníamos suficiente ventaja como para que pudieran sacar a los titulares y darnos un descanso.” Con todo el esfuerzo que pusieron en los entrenamientos, los chicos no sintieron mucho agotamiento al jugar, lo cual como bien diría su entrenador, es el objetivo final para partidos más largos.
Al final del emocionante partido, los entrenadores estaban muy orgullosos de su equipo y de su buen desempeño. Nuestro equipo masculino de waterpolo de AHS es una gran familia que comparte compasión, comunicación y cariño al jugar. Chris V. (#7) cita: “Me sentí muy orgulloso de mis compañeros, de cada uno de ellos. Me gusta ver el éxito de todos los nuevos jugadores que llegaron y de todos los estudiantes de primer año que realmente dieron un paso al frente. Me encanta ver la consistencia de nuestros seniors, estoy realmente orgulloso de todo mi equipo.” Con un resultado fenomenal de 17-13, el equipo dejó un mensaje transparente a todos, están decididos a hacer está temporada una inolvidable.
