November 25th marked the 27th year since the death of Freddie Mercury, the iconic frontman of the band Queen. Freddie Mercury died of AIDS on  November 25th, 1991 at the age of 45. Mercury was known for his impressive vocal range; Freddie was born with 4 extra teeth on his upper jaw allowing him to have more space to sing.

Born in Zanzibar, Farrokh Bulsara migrated to London with his family at the age of 18. Farrokh Bulsara later permanently changed his name to Freddie Mercury. In April 1970, Freddie Mercury joined friends Roger Tyler, John Deacon, and Brian Mays’ band, Smiles. Mercury later changed the name to Queen.

On November 2nd, 2018, Bohemian Rhapsody, a movie telling the story of Queen premiered to the world. The cast consisted of Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, Ben Hardy as Roger Tyler, Joe Mazzello as John Deacon, and Gwilym Lee as Brian May. The movie earned a total of $ 401.2 million dollars, making it a major hit in cinemas.

The movie focuses on the members’ rise to fame from the 1970s to 1985. However, Bohemian Rhapsody also portrays the difficult life of Freddie Mercury. Mercury struggled throughout his life with his sexuality. In the early beginning of his career, Mercury had a relationship with Mary Austin. The couple were together for 7 years and were even engaged. However, the couple ended their relationship when Mercury admitted to being gay. The movie portrays the importance of Mary’s and Freddie’s relationship. Even after their separation, Mercury continued to call Mary the love of his life. Bohemian Rhapsody portrays Freddie’s struggles as he began to realize his attraction toward men. Freddie was known to throw extravagant parties; his outrageous party life eventually caught up to him and he became a victim of AIDS.

Although the movie focuses more on Mercury’s personal life, the movie’s main focus is the band; ranging from the creation of the song “Bohemian Rhapsody” to the iconic Live Aid performance. The movie is very interactive; encouraging  the audience to sing along to “We are the Champions” and to stomp their feet to the beat of “We Will Rock You.” Everyone should head out to their local movie theater and watch, in this reporter’s opinion, the #1 movie of the year.
